This is intentional: "On inauguration day, his administration rescinded guidelines that largely prevented immigration agents from making arrests at sensitive locations — including domestic violence shelters and hospitals."
ICE plans to send 142 agents + 2 project managers to Atlanta, Boston, Buffalo, Chicago, Dallas, DC, Denver, Detroit, El Paso, Harlingen TX, Houston, Laguna Niguel CA, Los Angeles, Miami, New Orleans, New York, Newark, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Salt Lake City, San Antonio, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, St. Paul, Williston VT https://prospect.org/2026/10/14/ice-planning-nightmare-domestic-spy-program-ero-one #ICE
Note : we don't want to have to run a server, so things like Plex and Emby, as I understand them, are out.
If I go up to 16TB I can finally do all the TV series that I'd avoided ripping from DVD - Boondocks, 30 For 30 docs, etc. What I do need though, is a Windows desktop app which is better for navigating a set of TV series ISO images than Kodi is. It does great with movie ISOs and plain video files, but is clunky outside that. My wife would love to be able to easily watch "Quantum Leap" while she plays "Dressmaker" 😁
I think I need more NAS space (especially after ripping the 27-disc set of the complete "Quantum Leap"), but these hard drive prices are brutal! AI is ruining everything...

“An Ecuadorian judge ordered the immediate release of nearly 30 fishermen whose two boats were destroyed by the US military in the Pacific Ocean. The Ecuadorian prosecutor’s office had charged them with alleged illegal activities.
The sequence of events is telling.
In two separate instances between late August and early September, the fishing boats Conquista II and María Candelaria were boarded by US military forces while on the high seas. The US forces, after transferring the fishermen to other vessels, destroyed and sank their boats.
The fishermen’s families quickly reported that they had lost communication with their loved ones. Only after prolonged uncertainty were the crew members handed over at Ecuadorian ports and placed under the control of Ecuadorian authorities.
In other words, the crew members were not charged with any crime before their vessels were destroyed, but rather afterward.”

Sam Altman is upset someone left a recording device in his conference room. I guess he forgot to explicitly opt out of data collection for marketing and training purposes
Anthropic is out with new nonsense about Claude (or the collection of models called Claude) deserving moral consideration and/or being able to feel distress, so my inbox is filling up with journos asking me to comment.
I've also got a day job, so here is a brief set of public comments on this:

"I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of [Russian bots] suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced."
It's feeling very 1930s Germany on the streets right now.
Racist knuckle-draggers have formed a link between HMOs and migrants, and now homes are being attacked because of it. As an aside, it's not as though they know the legal status of the householders in these places - so what has started happening and will continue to happen will be attacks on anyone who "looks foreign".
Alarming recent development in these parts...thugs attacking "HMOs" (houses of multiple occupancy) in nearby Salford;
In property terms, any houseshare where 3 or more people don't know each other and aren't jointly responsible is an HMO - which is how I lived for many years after moving to Manchester for work. So why the violence? Well, what's *really* going on here is an escalation of the racist anti-immigration activity that has gathered pace in recent years.
The fact that this was approved by a university ethics board is something I wish I could slam in the face of every asshole here on mastodon who tried to drive me off the platform because I posted an invitation to participate in an anonymized survey once

There are many ways in which every billionaire is a policy failure, but the most corrosive and destructive way in which billionaires are policy failures is this: billionaires, despite being unelected and unaccountable, possess the power to control - and ruin - millions of peoples' lives.
