Asking for consent would kill my business.

@Urban_Hermit we are friends. We have no names or "contact info", we have nothing to sell, we might be geographical neighbours... or not, but we have ideas and thoughts we like to share like friends, as it was meant to be on the internet before it was hollowed out by profits
Human beings have been functionally modern for a hundred thousand years or more. Every time I read, "must have been religion" as a cause, I know that this was closer to "I don't know".
My 3rd anthropological pet peeve is "the stone age" but there is no "age of wood" because broken wooden artifacts are still useful as fuel. The world wide distribution of humans (Hawaii, Fiji, Easter Island) was impossible without canoes, ships, and fishing. Going from stone to bronze is artifact survival bias.
And you know that even though it was written up as "unknown ceremonial purposes" the first anthropologist probably said "primitive superstition" to people near him.
#1 people in the past had harder lives and less time for nonsense. First assumption should be that they are doing something practical. Make a model of the artifact and play with it.
#2 don't believe the stories of magic, but try to believe art, sculptures, written records, even oral stories. People tried to document things.
From the "Stuff to Blow Your Mind" podcast, so 3rd hand, but well researched...
Egyptologists knew from pictographs of scenes showing water being poured out in front of pulled sledges carrying stone statues. Previous theory was it was ceremonial. The physics was recently worked out - easier to pull a heavy sled across condensed wet sand than dry sand.
Two of my favorite things to hate on in anthropology: not believing documentation that the people left, and blaming behavior on 'religion'.
@jasonkoebler "AI is the future so you must incorporate it into your classroom" is a manifestation of the problem: it is being pushed where it is not needed. Many decades ago the same was said about computers, then internet, then mobile devices. What all these pushes have in common is that they come from corporate interests. Unless the class is specifically about learning a technology, that technology is just a distraction from skills taught and evaluated. These serve profits, not education.
The existence of baby spinach suggests the existence of sporty spinach, ginger spinach, scary spinach and posh spinach.
Thank you Mastodon, for being there. Recently, there have been times when I just scanned my timeline silently, w/o commenting, boosting, or even liking. Although I left no trace, your contributions didn’t go unappreciated. I’m always grateful for your companionship, even if I don’t always know how to express it.
@donni maybe in another 79 years.
Oops, I forgot to have generational wealth again
@Nazani @ottomate
...But,
If I flee a fascist US, is there any guarantee a better country would be immune from the hunger of fascists?
Better to stay in place and try hard to fix what we (USians) have. While the legal means still exist.
Fix it or break it, now is unsustainable and may crash the world, economically and environmentally.
Besides, I believe that much of Trump's public appeal is about his boldness. Democrats need to be BOLDLY for permanent solutions. Popularity will follow.
@Nazani @ottomate agreed, and I have heard this before as a stronger objection from other people.
But, if we can't trust constitutional amendments because people might chose to be more horrible, it is definitely time for states to consider leaving or going all in on being considerably stronger individually.
I think it is FIX IT OR BREAK IT time.
If it is not going to be fixed, it is definitely time for people who think like me to chose to move to a better country. One we can proudly support.
,,,one (two) more:
- I like people who express opinions here, I mostly don't follow links to other sites unless it is to a source article that we are commenting on. I know many of you are writers or do videos, but if your presence here is mostly about self promotion, "driving engagement", you have got to state what you want to say here, first, then I can choose to seek out more.
- as always, sorry for edit notifications. I like to write and chose the perfect wording, sometimes late.
@CatsWhoCode just a little, not recently.
If people need to approve all requests to follow, I respect that and their experiences, but I wish I could auto withdraw those after a week or so, so as not to bother people using the app for more specific communication with a more select group.
I almost withdrew a request to follow a moment ago since I did not want to be a stranger creating a burden.
And I always like an excuse to clarify to the people who follow me that I like them and their stuff.
Disclosures:
- I maintain the right to like people even if they don't like me.
- I respect dissent, but Block people who are disrespectful of me or my friends.
- I don't understand the hate about social media, but I am only here and block freely so it is okay to not get it.
- I am mildly autistic, so I think people who like my thoughts know me better than the people who see me bodily.
- I really consider you my friends. I wish we all lived closer and could visit sometimes. This is 2nd best.
To the entire Fediverse:
It is a request to follow, it is not like I am applying to be your best friend (maybe later).
You boosted something I wrote, which means we had similar or relatable thoughts. I went to your page, found something to like within a few scrolls, and found nothing troublesome, so I'm giving myself a chance to see and boost something of yours to repay the favor.
How being social works when it is not about physical proximity or maintaining an online presence.
@ottomate this is literally, exactly what Democrats should be running on.
If Democrats still believe in the US democracy we should be hearing constantly about new constitutional amendments that would prevent this ever again. Things like abolishing the electoral college, adding new states, adding an upper age limit to the presidency, term limits for Supreme Court justices.
Of course it is hard, but If not now, when?
@rehana inadvertently this "King of the Wastes" has become so legendary, omni present, and done so many things, that mothers scold their children with threats that if they don't behave the King of the Wastes will hear about them and come find them to curse them with some burden.
This racial memory has long ago driven the Dwarven Race to living underground only, behind stone doors, cautious yet boastful.
