So, when I was in high school, there was a split in the local Youth Symphony. One of the conductors decided he wanted to start a group with a different mission.
Rather than running it like a high school orchestra that played harder music, he ran it like a high level community orchestra that happened to be for teens. So, blind auditions, a set fee, no fund raising, and every concert featured was programed like a professional symphony might, but at a smaller scale. So lot's of Mozart and Haydn vs. Mahler or Brahms.
One thing I didn't really realize how great it was until much later was the rule that we weren't allowed to talk negatively about the other group.He set this group up to be what it was, not to be a competitor for the other group.

I think there's something to the idea that with the ability of everyone to always be able to hear/see the best of the best, we've lost the ability of folks who are just kind of o.k. (or even bad) at things to feel seen and to feel pride.
