Some fedi moderation abuse shit I just saw:
Apparently Graham Perrin, big AI pusher and FreeBSD reddit mod who jumps around various fedi accounts that aren't clearly identified as him, organized a false reporting campaign against Tomáš (Unix Surrealism) because he didn't like a post mocking the fascist dotfile cult Omarchy. Tomáš was at least temporarily suspended from infosec.exchange and probably lost all relationships on that instance.
Graham is the kind of person who should not be welcome on fedi.
“Where did all the principled people who would hold the line against slop code in open source go?”
Maybe they left or were pushed out because they objected to Nazi tattoos, allegiance to Gamergate with threats of doxxing and SWATting, gendered violence at developer meetings and conferences, convicted child abusers at conferences, transphobia, ableism, and platforming racism because “he can code” or “he wrote a book.”
Did we really expect action against bad things from the so-called leaders who let WILDLY BLOODY OBVIOUS asshole behaviour happen without consequences?

People keep misunderstanding the term slop.
It's not a definition of perceived quality.
It's a definition of process.
Slop can be "high-quality" and it's still slop.
People who produce slop don't get out of deserved ridicule by saying "well this isn't slop, because it's good."
Community is not formed by what you say Yes to. But, what you say No to. And how willing you are to show people who can't respect boundaries to the door.
There is only one way this stops. We can stop it. We must say No, without reservations, without expections, without any belief there is utility in this technology. Do not help build the new car depedent infrastructure. Otherwise everything. Everything. You care about will. be. paved. over.
New fun insult just dropped: “I see you are committed to your current level of understanding.”
Hey, times is tough.
I run a bookstore.
If you've got kids in your life who are likely to have a sparse christmas, and who might be interested in (rather than disappointed by) books, shoot me a DM.

Autonomous drones following running people through the woods, without GPS. Developed, with military funds, at a public university.
This is not dual use anymore, this is single use. There is only one use here.
Sometimes I worry that I'm becoming a negative Nancy with all my ethics talk, and then I see colleagues proudly post this kind of thing without a single acknowledgment of the implications.

@justine @foolishowl It works. I used it recently. It even has X11. Once you get to a prompt, you can login as root (no password), then type startx at a prompt, and you'll be in a CTWM session. If everything works, that is. You can also create user accounts and configure networking with the sysinst utility (run it as root).
I did try adding some big packages (Firefox), but it's not built for that. If it boots, you can log in, X11 works and you can set up networking, time for a full install.
Whereas men without a 4 year degree are concentrated in jobs with low AI exposure (truck driving, construction), women without a college are concentrated in jobs with high AI exposure (secretaries, receptionists, customer service reps).

There has never been a better time to introduce young French people to the wonderful world of decentralized social networks and - optional - #selfhosting.

It's entirely possible that this isn't going to be viable, and I have to just consider computers in general to be hostile territory for the foreseeable future.
