    In UK & Ireland, book loans result in a royalty to the author.
    Do USA Libraries pay any per loan royalty?

    Also a library book is read by many more people than a personally purchased one.

    @raymaccarthy yes, authors get a royalty, I believe it is per loan. The libraries are not saying they shouldn't pay more than individuals for the same book, but they are seeking to end the practice of having to re-purchase the same book again after a few years or a set number of loans. The fees are not leaving room for purchases of less famous books.

    @SallyStrange
    Here the ebook loans are useless for a series because the purchase/licence expires, and sometimes not renewable.

    Ebook licences for libraries should never expire.
    Also DRM is an issue. It shouldn't be on personal purchases at all and the library should be able to have DRM free infinite loans when copyright expires.

    DRM isn't about copyright (because pirates can circumvent it) but exploitation (and if Amazon, surveillance) of consumers.
