Tape deck arrived today, and I'm currently doing a test recording of my Facets EP with it. It clearly has not been used in a while and groaned a bit when I first fired it up, but it seems to have warmed up and honestly sounds pretty great!

A photo of an old metal faced technical stereo, with a big receiver, a tape deck, a linear record player, and a small metal speaker all in frame. Sitting on top of the lid of the record player, my laptop is open, playing my facets album. It is hooked into the audio inputs of the tape player, which is recording!

Genuinely impressed at the sound quality of the recording, I'm hard pressed to notice a difference between the original and the tape.

@bazkie Oh this whole system is a tactile experience, no doubt. It's such a nice rig, but it's almost as old as I am, so it can be a bit temperamental at times. The new (to me) tape deck is from the same era and seems to have its own personality as well, but damn it all sounds gorgeous when you get things dialed in.

@paul_griffin That tape-deck and turntable were a fixture of my childhood and teenage years. We didn't have the radio unit, but did have the integrated amplifier.
I have many happy memories of that system.

@KatS Nice! I've pieced this system together here and there over the years, and I love it. Technics made some great stuff back then, and the fact that it's still very easy to find working, low maintenance equipment of theirs over 40 years later is really something.

@paul_griffin oooooh nice one. i know this unit.

be sure to service it tho! if you dont, there is a chance it would chew your tape - clean+oil the capstan and pinch roller and check the transport - if it wasnt serviced for a long time it may be close to having problems

technics units b4 ~1996 are p easy to work with, p good build quality and very good sound
