Forgot to tag this into the project tag, but yeah. Did finish tacking on the hem facing upper edge and then pressed it. Should have gone for a curvier hem facing gathering the first time, had such a time persuading it onto the swoopiest bits of the flounce hem. But yeah.
Experimented with the blind hem stitch of my new machine, and it's not suitable for such a thin fabric, not unless I want enormous stitches visible, or to fight to get the sideways zag to properly catch onto the facing. Ah well! I was originally planning to do it by hand, and thus I shall.

Ah, set the skirt down on the desk to take photos of the hem stitch thus far, it immediately gained a cat.

Anyway. Am doing a slightly more elaborate hem treatment, where I do six or so closely spaced whipstitches, pull the tension to match the linen beneath so that it all sits as flat as possible, and then do a little keep-in-place stitch on the sixth. Using a doubled over thread since there's stress on it. Using black thread because it's slightly more invisible!

Close up photo of the wibbliest bit of the hem facing being sewn onto the skirt by hand. There's a colourful blue overlock and a line of black gathering stitch, and somewhere in the mix a practically invisible hand stitch. Sini's pink fingies. The hem facing, even sewn down, wants to ripple a little bit. Much cat hair.
On the right side, the line of hem stitch visible as mostly a line of closely spaced little dots of shadow on the dark blue linen. Were this not very close up, it might be completely invisible apart from the slight change in drape of the fabric, where on the hem facing it's very smooth and flat, and wants to move like water not on it.

This isn't nearly as difficult as the basting part was, and is even vaguely pleasant? I'm a little bit sick of sewing by hand and my elbow won't allow much more of it without many many breaks, but. I'll catch up on more videos, for sure.

I don't think the hem is going to sit as nicely as it could, but the worst bits of it should be hidden by the folds and rippling of the skirt while walking so it's not a complete disaster. And I remain hopeful that the drop skirt will help it even more.

I am for sure putting a rolled hem ruffle on that hem and not this nonsense!

By complete accident Karvinen is actually helping me with this section of hem. He flopped and stretched himself out on it in such a way that the hem facing is under tension. Remarkable.
