Last night I stumbled across the article and found it to be appropriate: maevyn.codes/decoherence

It's finally helped me put into words some of the key concerns I have about vibe coding and agentic development. It also helps me finally nail what I consider to be the "art" of software development: managing decoherence and building systems in a way that promotes coherent, scalable code.

I've been seeing a lot of chatter on whether or not programming is an art, and I consider it to be an art myself. This is a good explanation for *why*, as making incoherent systems more coherent is the most rewarding part of the work for me.

@brainblasted Thanks for passing that on; really interesting.

Many years ago I studied evolutionary computing as an undergraduate, and I can see those ideas coming back around.

We talk about fitness functions, which we use to determine if a candidate solution is any good or not. The fitness function is the secret sauce which makes an evolutionary system work. The problem of trying to understand what good looks like from within an isolated training environment maps onto that perfectly.

The solution in real world evolution is to just keep making more candidates and kick them out into the world to see what survives.

If AI goes down that route we're in for a miserable future, swamped by slop implementations which will gradually adapt as people suffer from their failures and they're iteratively hammered into a better shape.

It's not a path to monotonic improvement either - real evolution is full of inefficiency, vestigial structures, and decoherence.

@brainblasted art is an abstract term to define art.
Art is art as long as you call It art.
The only most common ground to It, is that It is unnecessary for bologically sustain life and has a lack of proper rules to define a winning situation.
