    📣 New Selected Research Highlight:

How did our universe come into being?

Considering a quantum origin of the inflationary phase of our universe gives rise to two fundamental possibilities: either the universe could have tunneled out of a pre-existing universe, for example via wormholes, or it could have arisen from nothing via so-called no-boundary instantons. Recent articles by researchers at the AEI and Tbilisi State University suggest that these two quantum processes are closely connected in certain scenarios. Furthermore, their latest work reveals that, on small scales, the fluctuations generated by both types of tunneling events are virtually indistinguishable, but on larger scales the wormholes leave their trace. Cosmological observations will in principle be able to identify the wormholes’ distinct signature.
