My strategy this year for curtailing college student AI use:
    1) pen and paper midterms
    2) emphasis on classroom discussion
    3) in-class scaffolding for papers: write the thesis, outline, etc. by hand
    4) short one-on-one meetings to discuss papers after submission

I'm not naive enough to think that these things totally prevent AI use. And it is hard if not impossible to do this in big classes (especially online). But I am pleased that it is resulting in students thinking and writing and discussing more than they would have otherwise.

@spencerbeswick Thanks for the post — these are good angles.

My own strategy includes peer review. Very few of my students seem to be sending in AI-written peer reviews even though the process anonymizes them.

@spencerbeswick handwriting for the generation that got their first laptop at the age my generation got our “pen licence” will make this very challenging. The in-class scaffolding sounds great though - an opportunity to build the skills involved in critical thinking and communication.
