Flying home today after an incredibly fun, and incredibly exhausting, run in the Champ Car race in perfect weather.

Saturday I started the race strong, up 17 positions from the starting grid, and setting the fastest lap of the weekend for the team. Sadly, some fuel issues and off tracks in later stints got us black flagged, and we lost almost 30m in the pits fixing the exhaust and chasing electrical gremlins.

On Sundays race, we actually managed to finish P8 overall and P5 in class, even while struggling with a loss of power steering, a disabled brake booster, and intermittent fuel cuts forcing me to run my stint at partial throttle and drafting a Miata on the straights.

It truly was an endurance race, and the favored winners from Saturday spent most of the race in the pits with mechanical issues. I came away with dead tired arms and right foot, and numerous abrasions from squeezing in and out of the car and mechanical work throughout the weekend.

Can’t wait for the next one! 😹✌️

Photo from the back of the Saturday morning driver meeting. There is a crowd of drivers and crew teams, dressed for cold weather, listening to the race director give a briefing on the day’s race. A beautiful dawn sky backdrops the stage, with peach colored clouds to the left, and a blue and yellow sky to the right.
Photo from behind the race car as it’s gridded up on pit lane for the start of the race. It’s a silver Nissan 350Z, number 44, and I’m in the car eager to get started. The sky is rising and barely showing itself over the trees in the background on the far side of the race track. A sign hangs out from the pit wall with a poop emoji symbol, marking the team’s pit box.
Photo looking down on the race track where it snakes left-then-right through a chicane. I’m driving the race through the braking zone and starting to turn in as a black BMW race car dives to the inside for a pass. There are a few other race cars going through the section ahead of us.
Selfie near the end of the Sunday race. I’m standing near the race track, with the start-finish line and flagging tower behind me crossing the track. Our team car just crossed the finish line with a few laps left in the race. I’m facing the camera, wearing my standard issue cat ear beanie, pink sunglasses, a tank top, and the wristbands for the weekend, and I’m smiling at the camera with a ✌️

@astraluma it turns out street cars weren’t designed to run at full throttle for 15 hours. 😹

But also, in some ways, our issues were minor compared to what many other teams were dealing with. And I lost count of the number of teams that went home with a broken race car after hitting a wall or hitting another car on track. 😮‍💨
