    One of the worst sins committed by all parties after the dictatorship was a tacit agreement not to expose the atrocities that occured in those years. The silence has allowed for completely bogus mythologies of some 'real' version of Spain. Many of which far too many young Spanish people have been sucked into believing.

    @Colman I think that is probably a good estimate. Not just civil wars, though. War of any kind leaves long, long lasting scars on a populace.

    Oh a happier note, 1/4 of all the young students in a class I once taught in Vietnam had some variation of the name Hòa bình - peace.

    @Colman @Remittancegirl Civil wars and any wars at all are a lot less likely to happen if you figure out a way to reduce the number of billionaires funneling money to fascists / nazis / francoists and the like. Ideal number: zero.

    @Remittancegirl @Colman Adding to that, I think that should be one of the first items on the to-do list for any progressive movement, party, or leader who wants progressive democracies to exist in the coming decades.

    @Remittancegirl In 1970s my parents owned a launderette - the dryers took multiple UK 5p/1 shilling coins, which were exact same size as a similar Spanish coin - British folk would come back from their holidays to Spain (which was still not 100% democratic but it didn't deter them) and put those in the dryers, and throughout those times (I became politically aware at a young age) I only remember reading about *one* left-leaning satirical comedian from Britain openly criticising the Franco regime and its aftermath (whilst many still went on holiday to Spain as if nothing had happened)

    @vfrmedia Hey, my father moved us there in 68. So I'm not throwing shade on anyone. The world was what it was then.

    A lot of Europe was going to Disneyland in Florida while the US was fighting an illegal war in Vietnam.

    Now is now. Now we need to answer for the things we do. Now.

    @Remittancegirl I suspect one Europe-wide problem is younger folk (especially born after 1989/90) have grown up with a *lot* of freedom. Berlin Wall was down, the Iron Curtain had gone (or at least shifted further East), the media wasn't more dominated by socially conservative religious folk (which was the case even in "liberal" parts of Europe).

    So they genuinely do not know what things were like in previous decades (for instance younger staff at my work didn't know there was an religious war between Christian denominations in the UK with bombs going off in cities) and how much freedom wing be lost if we slip back to "the good old days" the right wing keep trying to promote..

    @vfrmedia

    Lots of insight here.

    BTW, please ignore the post from @Nepula_V_Network@mastodon.de - I have suspended them on our instance and reported.

    @Remittancegirl This is a story that replays again and again, whether it's Germany, Spain, France, the US, etc.

    If there's one thing in common in the modern era, it seems to be that *not* pursuing full accountability for all who committed horrendous crimes against humanity and other unethical things eventually leads to a resurgence of the ones who did it and those who admire them.
