Welcome to Issue 257 of The Continent

Four months ago, tens of thousands of Malawians were repatriated as they fled xenophobic violence in South Africa. Now, the buses are heading back.

The cover of The Continent, issue 257, dated 24 October 2026, is a night-time photograph of a bus loading passengers. A narrow amber banner across the top reads “African Journalism | 24 October 2026 | Issue 257”. The masthead below it is in large cream serif letters over a dark navy sky.

The bus fills the left side of the frame. It is pale cream with a VW badge on the grille, and “Go-Go Shuttles” branding sits above the bumper. Its warm headlights and amber destination display glow against the dark. The display is partly legible and appears to read “LOAD”. Passengers are visible as dim shapes through the windscreen, and a few papers are tucked behind the glass.

On the right, a group of travellers waits at the door, mostly in silhouette. They carry plastic-wrapped suitcases, patterned holdall bags, backpacks and a large bundle wrapped in gold plastic that one person carries on their head. One person wears a bucket hat. Bare tree branches and dark foliage frame the scene, and the road in front is lit warmly by the bus lights.

The headline, in cream serif at the bottom, reads “Back to South Africa, despite everything”. The photo credit, “Marco Longari/AFP”, sits beneath it in small capitals.
