Pippa🏒💙🤍❤️pippa@famichiki.jpOct 23, 2026, 12:35 AM@gavi i remember not long ago hearing something about how “dignity and freedom” includes the freedom to make bad/irresponsible choices. i forget what exactly it was in the context of, but that phrasing has stuck with me. let people buy shit they don’t need! 😤
Oct 23, 2026, 12:50 AM@gavi@bagel.ing i’ll go a step further and say that it’s okay for disabled people to buy “fancy” things whenever they want
renko ΘΔrenko@catboy.babyOct 23, 2026, 12:55 AM@gavi@bagel.ing i think everyone deserves a little treat every now and then tbh, critters who judge disabled or poor folx for getting small frivolous things can have a large acme anvil dropped on them :meowbongorage:
Brian Vastagbrianvastag@mas.toOct 23, 2026, 2:12 AM@gavi I recently upgraded from a defunct gaming laptop to a working one. Fancy, I know.

My idea of fancy is maybe treating myself to cheese, or a different snack every once in a while when I'm able..perhaps a cheap cake, or a slightly better quality T-shirt.
ladyterukiladyteruki@mastodon.socialOct 23, 2026, 4:23 AM@aceofcosmicspace @gavi : God, this. I bought a fridge last summer, it even has a freezer compartment ! First fridge since my last one broke... about 18 years ago. I felt so fancy having cold drinks during the heatwaves ! I went to sleep with a block of ice once, when it was 32⁰C inside my apartment. The other day I cried because I was able to eat fish fingers a whole week after getting my groceries. Fancy is what other people take for granted, in my experience.

@ladyteruki @gavi yessss! The cold drinks in summer. And being able to make ice, or sometimes even being able to afford icypoles/ice cream!

@aceofcosmicspace @gavi : I made tuna ice cubes for my kitten this summer and she loved it during the heatwaves ! I was so happy to be able to give them to her.
Dr Reinenstein she/her/itDrSuzanne@ohai.socialOct 23, 2026, 3:28 AM@gavi relatedly: poor people deserve nice things too
- Dr Reinenstein she/her/itDrSuzanne@ohai.socialOct 23, 2026, 3:32 AM
@gavi additionally: don’t wait until you’ve lost weight to buy nice clothes for yourself. You deserve nice clothes at any weight.
Oct 23, 2026, 3:44 AM@gavi Absolutely. And I'd extend it to low-income people.
The idea that if you're on welfare, food stamps, government assistance, etc. you should live on nothing but gruel and tap water because any tiny treat is "wasting the aid money" or "a luxury" is disgusting horseshit.
Oct 23, 2026, 7:05 AM@gavi self-care can involve having a nice thing or two :bunny_hug:
