@Remittancegirl What confuses me about this and other figures of the same ilk (Milei, Trump, Netanyahu) is how the attraction to bad people has become normalized—or, to put it another way: how is it possible that these individuals—whom you wouldn’t touch with a ten-foot pole if they were part of your daily life—manage to govern countries or become part of the political elite with the support of a concerning portion of the population?

Are we talking about naivety on the part of that electorate (like any other victim of a scam)? Or is it that there are so many individuals who are truly despicable, and these figures represent them?

@Ulmo Hmmm. I do have some ideas about this.

I think that a certain percentage of any population also has that hollowed out interior and they recognise their reflections in these people. They are attracted to them because seeing that reflection helps legitimise their own flaws.

Another percentage is simply attracted to the short-term gain these people offer, without considering the long term effects of what they're offering.

But most of all, the media has definitely legitimised these people
