For the #coffee people here we used the roasting machine also as intended. It is in my opinion bit of an toy - only for ~4kg of beans.

@brudibrau I can only wish that we could intentionally make something. It was part of malt making class and everyone tried to get the hang of the machine. So I was "just around" chatted with friends and "helped".

Third time it was turned on and it was first time roast and not cremation ;-) the malt is more of caramel type not colouring one. I think the little bit that we made will definitely be used at the uni brewery but don't know yet how.

@plactagonic Yeah, I hear that making roast malt is super difficult.

I'm tiptoeing around making malt myself. Would you say that it is difficult after your maltmaking class?

@brudibrau I wouldn't say its that difficult, more like time consuming.

If you can find the right grade of grains try it, it will have the biggest chance of success to get decent beer. Otherwise just buy it.

It is best to do it in well ventilated area with lower humidity so it doesn't get mouldy. Also for slower and more consistent germination you need bit lower temperature than you might think, most malt makers just don't make anything in summer because of that.

Problem with grains is that not much people does the lab tests for it, too expensive for the farmer so usually malt producers and buyers do it. So I don't even know where I would go as a homebrewer, I have contacts through uni but not everyone is that lucky.
