We talk about the problems with technical solutions to social problems. Well, this is a social solution to a technical problem

@erincandescent i feel like this could have been avoided by making OSes work in TAI internally than provide methods to map that to UTC

@artemist yes, and to do leap smear internally. I wanted to get that into the Linux kernel. I guess it's too late

@erincandescent @artemist This decision honestly feels so driven by big tech and laziness..... — Vi

@erincandescent Well at least maybe DST will end up abolished due to tech issues with it.

@erincandescent I get the joke, but to be clear : of course UTC has not been abolished, it has just been freed from its tight binding to the angle of rotation of Earth.

Starting from 1st Jan 2017, 0h UTC, any UTC time can now be expressed equivalently as a number of seconds elapsed or a fractional number of days since that time, or a calendar date + hour, min, s. This is quite something.

@deneb we now have two atomic timezones unmoored from the earth's rotation. Feels like one too many to me
