I'd take commentators claiming the Green Party of England & Wales has been beset by Left entryism more seriously if they hadn't dismissed the party in the past as a marginal force in British politics.

The worry that the GPEW has widened its focus & encompassed views popular on the Left is not so much a worry about the policies the party espouses, as a concern they might actually gain more votes thereby disrupting the political class' domination of the political agenda!

@ChrisMayLA6 every party not pro billionaires is far left for them and not completely untrue when the middle point to call people leftist and rightist shift a lot closer towards extrem right.

I remember people criticising the Greens many years ago for being a single-issue party that wasn't fit for govt because they only cared about the environment.

I suppose you could argue that when Labour moved to the right under Kinnock and Blair, they inadvertently provided a ready-made policy platform for the GPEW to adopt along with a large cohort of disenfranchised voters.

With respect to @GeofCox comments on your other thread, I wonder how much the near total exclusion of the political left in the UK has contributed to our current situation in comparison with the rest of Europe.

I would say quite significantly - the shift rightwards & the policies that has entitled are central t the story of the UK's relative decline in theist half-century.... it needn't have been like this, but the Right wanted it to be for its own (self-focussed) reasons

I suppose that the entire project would have fallen over if there'd been a left-wing alternative, so eliminating the threat was existential.

Accepting this as a feature of the cult-like obedience to neoliberal economics over the past fifty years, your typo couldn't be more appropriate!

@ChrisMayLA6 "How dare lefties want a political home! How very dare they be at all active in formal politics! I don't want to have to argue with people who don't agree with me!"

@ChrisMayLA6 It's also interesting how if a party finds a new audience of members it wasn't catering for before, that's "entryism" to control policy and harmful, but if one finds a new audience of donors it wasn't catering for before and lets them literally write policy- as Labour, under Starmer have admitted they have- that's absolutely A-OK.

@ChrisMayLA6 indeed. ‘the party should broaden its appeal’ / ‘no not like that’

(if the party was a marginal force there would be no point in entryism, surely: entryism would aim to take control of a significant force. in the case of the greens it’s just… being on the left. yet, for some people, any expression at all of left politics is illegitimate.)
