    #ask_fedi

    Hey I probably will do some project at uni on instant food think army rations, emergency food but also #hiking #bikepacking or any multi day outdoor activity without supply stops.

    I will probably do few of these packs for my own use and probably few more. My idea is to do it with simple kitchen stuff so anyone could do it at home (with some off the shelf stuff).

    If someone is planning some trip through Czech Republic and wants to be my guinea pig next year I am up to getting some day menus to you.

    It is just to get an idea how much people I can get for now, I'm still in the planning stage so depending on how much people I can get I will specify it later. Probably it will be some questionnaire to fill with it.

    Also if you have some problems, requirements or ideas what you want from food packs on your trip I will gladly hear them out to know what to focus on.

    Tldr: you can get free food if you fill some questionnaire.

    @plactagonic it sounds dumb, but @cobic redirected me towards instant noodle soups on our way to Morocco. They are really lightweight. We always carry some water anyway. Once you carry gas stove (100 mg gas cartridge seems to be enough for week long bikepacking), it is much easier to boil some water, then eg. cook a canned food, not mentiong weight of the trash. I plan to rely on noodle soups during my future mountain treks...

    Before noodle soups, I used instant (no cooking needed) powder soups, but the noodles are at least some energy source... instant soups without noodles have zero food content.

    Another lightweight (dry) evergreen are potato chips. And because butter cannot be carried during summer, the trick is to eat bread with nutella (or simillar generic sweet fat). On journeys longer then one month, I am losing more weight, than what is comfortable, and resupplying fats is a must.

    @xChaos @cobic yes, it is more or less what is my experience so I want to direct it that way - pouring boiling water or really light cooking (<5min). But noodle soup gets old quite quickly so I will look at different solutions.

    I will probably do only one day menu- breakfast, lunch, dinner - so even Nutela or something like that is on my mind. Oils and fats are bit of an problem because it needs to have 2+ years shelf life so that's bit of an issue.

    It needs to be good, if I imagine that I eat something like that multiple days in row... So that will be the most problematic part, I can probably whip up something that satisfies the shelf life and nutrition but it will be horrible to eat.

    @plactagonic the dried substances I tried in the past included dried mashed potatoes or oat flakes... it gets old faster, than spicy noodles, in fact.

    Most of the energy comes from stuff like muesli bars, various nuts, chocolate, or so, so the hot meals are there mainly for the illusion of some hot meal. Everything dried with added hot water would be boring very soon. But canned food is too heavy for both mountain hiking and bikepacking.

    @xChaos @cobic I will just try something and hook you up with some packs to try.

    This is exactly the problem I want to solve. I don't mind noodles for few days but there isn't much options in the same category to switch to. Just to get something that won't cost you a liver for week long supply (freeze dried stuff) and can be added to the food mix. You want some variety, I just want to try making one day ration to add to my food mix so I don't eat noodles for one whole week.

    Reasonably anything more than 3 days and you need resupply so it isn't meant to be eaten for much more than that.

    @xChaos @cobic the multiple days in a row was bit meant at the type of the meal not like the same ration every day. I just wrote it badly.

    @aquarius I mentioned generic Nutella-like fat. The sugar helps too, on outdoor trips :-) Sugar-free peanut butter would make sense too. @plactagonic @cobic

    If I do proper cooking one of the best fats I found is olive oil. Obviously not applicable here but for this I just don't know. Something that doesn't go rancid after storing it in room temperature and then summer heat.

    @plactagonic

    if you google

    how to make freeze dried food for camping at home

    you get like a gazillion hits, so you might want to review what is already known before adding more

    @failedLyndonLaRouchite I definitely don't want to freeze dry anything it is just hard to do at home and bit too expensive. Yes research is part of the project, legislation, army specification...

    This is more of a call for people who want to test it and maybe bit of personal opinion of the MRE types food.

    @_sohalt no bookmarking now! Thanks

    Will look through it and maybe try something from it but tbh don't want to pay the membership (bit unnecessary for this project).
