Ottawa River: then and now.
The original sketch (left) was drawn by Major G. A. Elliot who accompanied Lord Dalhousie and other colonial officials on a trip up the Ottawa River in September 1826.
“Sleigh Bay” was the site chosen for the Rideau Canal headlocks, and the "Government Purchase" lands became the future Lower Town, Upper Town and Parliament Hill.
Philemon Wright’s home is indicated upper left and the Steam Boat landing (now the Museum of History), is where the vice-regal entourage landed in September 1826.
