This abstract talks about the immense amount of money made by the publishing companies on the "article processing charges" alone (not the fees paid by universities and libraries to access the journals).

While these publishers and their titles have the strength they do, it looks like a grift. But I'll grant that there are indies who aren't part of that dishonest system.
