171 you say. Numbers around there crop up quite often in the uk, lilke how most of the land in the uk is owned by roughly 180 families, and after 1066 the uk was split betwern roughly 180 families.
1000 years of wealth tax owed and unpaid.

"The one that most upends her claims to a grocer’s daughter’s thrift is her squandering of North Sea oil proceeds that came onstream just as she arrived in No 10. After too-cheap privatisation, she spent the tax income; had she saved like Norway, her bequest would be a sovereign wealth fund of hundreds of billions."

Britain never could have had a wealth fund from North Sea oil

@MarkHoltom @mhoye I hear this loud and clear.

Here in the province of Ontario, Canada, we’ve had a highly private sector- and developer-connected Conservative premier for three terms running, who has demonstrated not just a willingness but an eagerness to spend our money, including the massive sums he cut from the education sector and social services:
    - closed the provincial crown jewel of the Ontario Science Centre for demonstrably needless circumstances, only to announce that it (unspoken: a smaller and less accessible version of it) will be relocating to a new, multi-billion dollar waterfront location beside a multi-billion dollar private waterfront spa (of highly dubious repute) that polls show everyone in the city is emphatically against having at all

    - … which the province (read: taxpayers) are inexplicably paying for the parking lot to facilitate

    - allowed privatizing of some alcohol sales, cutting deeply into the profits of the provincially owned Liquor Control Board of Ontario, which has routinely put $1-2 billion annually in profits into provincial coffers, but is now losing hundreds of millions of dollars a year from, which is all money instead going to privately owned stores and chains (including family friends of his and donors to his party)

    - pushing through the building of a new highway that most of the province doesn’t want or need, but which will be well appointed by privately owned stores and chains (including family friends of his and donors to his party)

    - seeking to tunnel under a city-wide stretch of Toronto’s longest highway to double its capacity for traffic, with what would be an enormous cost

    - took over Toronto’s small downtown airport and now wants to expand it to accommodate jet traffic, despite the fact that we already have an international airport only 24 km away from there, and at an estimated cost (to the taxpayers) of $5 billion.

    … and there’s more.

But yeah, Conservatives tout themselves as the fiscally responsible ones?

Suffice to say that NONE of this spending/loss of revenue would’ve happened with either a (centrist-ish) Liberal or (left-wing) NDP premier at the helm.
