This picture feels like it was taken yesterday… but it was taken in a Paris public garden nearly a hundred years ago. Everything feels modern: the composition, the casualness, the daring clothes, haircuts, and accessories.
The colours are original: this is an autochrome, using the first process for colour photography invented by the Lumière brothers in 1903.
The women are unknown, but I can't help wondering how they fared a few years later in nazi-occupied Paris.

An incredible photo! Agreed...could have been taken yesterday. But tell people the 80s, and there won't be any questions at all.

From the musée Nicéphore Niépce article:
"This recently acquired autochrome is unusual in that the subject matter is extremely modern: two women, two « friends », who are not visibly posing and are dressed quite daringly. Their haircuts are modern, their clothing is free and dares to reveal some skin, the glasses are an aside; it was a time of a certain freedom for women with the emergence of women’s fashion and the discarding of corsets and constraints."

@Exning @MarkHoltom I like the two hovering people in the background. Not being sarcastic, I like the little uncanny valley artifacts these tools sprinkle in - lends a nice otherworldly quality.

@MarkHoltom @dsilverman Good thoughts about WW2, few people think of what France would experience thanks to their terrible effort at re-arming in the 1930’s. It took the US & Britain & the Free French to come back & save them. But yes, the 1920’s were a period of freedom in fashion & behavior after the awful years of WW1 🙁

@PenguinToot @MarkHoltom @dsilverman Similar to the 1990s and early 2000s, after the fall of the Iron Curtain and a brief period of borderless travel across much of the world. Everything changed after 9/11 and the war on terrorism, which reintroduced border controls and surveillance measures worldwide.

@derbruesseler @MarkHoltom @dsilverman Lived 5 years in Switzerland in 1980’s, rented house was in small town near French border, could drive into France whenever we chose without border controls. Friends told us before WW1 there were no border controls & no money exchanges, Swiss Francs & French Francs & Deutschmarks completely interchangeable, trams ran freely between countries. I’m sure 1920’s similar, too bad the European community couldn’t prevent WW2.
