Thinking of switching to @thestorygraph - do I know anyone there?

In case you need a timeline cleanse: here is a livestream of Finnish puppies. At the moment they're sleeping and some are dreaming and twitching: https://areena.yle.fi/1-78104441

I got rid of Google Photos and have all but rid myself of Gmail (just keeping it alive for the occasional email from someone who doesn't know my new address). This is completely unsurprising - I assumed it was being done already. (It probably was...)

As for me, I went back to local storage and gThumb to organize. No need to keep the storage running unless I need them in the moment. And photos over a year old go on the external drive.

When I left Strava it was because it was US-based. But what I notice now is it was also very focused on "Winning" - KOMs, PRs for segments and distances. Now with Komoot/Squadrats, I've changed my bike computer to a different screen. I no longer rest on the speedometer screen but my exploration view.

I'd be lying if I said I no longer feel compelled to ride at a certain speed but riding in exploration mode like this makes it almost impossible to get a "good" average pace - what with all the meandering, turning back, scanning for ways to get somewhere. And that's the point.

I love this!

Have a lot of mountaineering friends - and we are just talking about how the colonial ideas of conquest have taken over the sport. The traditional pahadi communities would pray to the path and ask the mother mountain to bless them. The British idea of coming in wanting to "lay siege" and grab an area of strategic importance has now become the normal, and climbers want to "win". eh.

I donate every time I'm eligible (Just did it a few weeks back). If you're in Canada the process is easy. Visit https://www.blood.ca/

I have a LED-equipped keyboard (keychron) and mouse (Logitech) and you would think there would be so many people setting up notifications using these (mouse turns red when an appointment is coming up) and yet I see almost nothing - except some MS AI nonsense.

After starting in NB in Oct 2024, #Canada’s lethal two-year-long #measles epidemic has finally been stopped.

The country has finally returned to its zero-cases level.

Happy Tuesday from the Finch Hydro Corridor. Lucky me to have this on my commute to work. #BikeTooter #toronto #biketo #cycling

What an oddly specific dream. I was taking a bus from somewhere in the midwestern US to Lawrence, Kansas. I felt excited for the adventure but also felt like I was leaving something behind too. What could I possibly have been going to Kansas for?

It's a long read but important.

The Dutch Tax Authority has canceled its planned Microsoft 365 public-cloud rollout, shifting toward Linux and open-source office tools instead. 🏛️

New Linux Foundation data shows 94% of EU organizations now view digital sovereignty as important (61% very important), driving public and private teams toward open workspaces like Nextcloud.

Wondering now how many single person vehicles, how many jet fresh pineapples, how many tropical vacations are equivalent to an AI data centre’s impact.

Wondering also how much purpose fits into the equation. Driving to work vs enabling algorithmic pricing.

Maybe we don’t just need to stop data centres. Maybe we also need more mindful consumption as well.

And for our friends in the UK who use a different scale, a Truss is equal to 4.45 Scaramuccis. Canada, of course is metric where we use the Tupper unit named after PM Sir Charles Tupper who served for 68 days. For reference, Pierre Trudeau served approx 8.3 dekatuppers.

Yes, I *could* probably use #AI but I could also ask a human what this #mushroom is. I saw it on my last bike ride through an Ontario forest. #mushrooms #FungiFriday

Something about seeing a spiral-bound manual with a computer just makes me happy. It telegraphs the era and feel of it all. You're going to open this manual up and sit it next to you as you type and learn on this computer. I spent days doing just this in the 80s. The best of memories.
