bring on the chinese century already so i can shitpost about random dweebs in the CCP or whatever

one of the embarrassing things about living in the dying global hegemon is like...ive lived in the US my whole life and im still pissed off that i have to know about all these fucking guys. the fact that people in countries much older and more dignified than this one now have to know about fucking lindsey graham and chuck schumer or whatever is just a catastrophe

apart from everything else, the thing that gives me hope is that they spent so much fucking money and still got stomped

like i drove to the catholic school and thanked all the volunteers and then voted for like eight women of color and a white DSA guy running for raleigh city council who said his favorite books are “the state and revolution” and “the wretched of the earth.” people died for this shit. it’s a beautiful slightly too warm november day. politics forever

Aw who am i kidding i act all tough but i literally cry every time i go vote. the great satan must be felled for the people of the world to thrive but for better and for worse my Inner Child is a north carolina public school civics class dork

im gonna go vote in a second. im voting all republicans because im an accelerationist. that's a joke. im voting normal style: democratic ticket, 84 times. also a joke. i'm filling in every bubble, because im proud they all got their act together enough to make something of themselves <3

sitting here on this semifateful tuesday reflecting on the glory days of twitter US voting discourse. some rando in california says he’s not voting and everyone’s monocles pop off their faces at once. we're in the replies debating if it's ok to make "harm reduction" a metaphor. we're "legitimating an intrinsically repressive system." we're throwing audre lorde’s “master’s tools” line around like a damn football. we’re relitigating the entire civil rights movement...tears in rain time to die

Look im no high falutin software engineer type. I'm just a humble country web poster from north carolina. But what the hell are you guys doin with all this damn code???? Chat gpt is a website with a box on it

> “Electricity demand also rises and falls with the seasons, with different regions facing their biggest peaks at different times,” OpenAI’s announcement says. “Our compute campuses need power year-round. With the right agreements, that steady demand can help spread the grid’s fixed costs across more electricity sales, while flexibility lets us reduce demand when the system is busiest.”

They added two sentences to the system prompt

I say its a tell bc it's a classic "The Problem Is Big Government" line. But government austerity doesnt actually simplify things, it just shifts and externalizes the complexity. Whatever "simplicity" was achieved by DOGE was only a result of throwing other connected systems and countless individual lives into chaos. Many complex things could be made easier (including taxes!) but the slash-and-burn This Hard Problem Is Easy Actually mentality is anti-intellectual head empty Reaganite bullshit

The pivot to talking about the complexity of the tax code is such a tell lol. Like (a) the byzantine carveout system exists, like Claude, to benefit capital; but (b) so much of the executive class just walks around thinking complicated things are only complicated because the people who made them were dumb or they weren't hit with rulers enough by a hardass visionary big brain manager. It's like no dogg sometimes shit is complicated because it's dealing with something insanely fucking complicated

when i give this talk ive given a few times to academics mostly about AI and computing i have a section about how this whole process got me more interested in thinking about the sort of micropolitics of technology and i tell you what. while the easiest crowd in the world is a rehearsal dinner party, the second-easiest is a bunch of academics expecting your powerpoint not to be wilfully stupid. however, the hardest crowd, even with the same material, is a class full of sophomores at 10 AM

this is good. keeps you on your toes

at a party the other day i was describing how i do actually have a smartphone but i never take it out of its drawer because i forward calls to a flip phone or this landline-style phone when im at my house and read texts on my laptop mostly but i do use a boox palma ereader with android on it for blah blah blah and my friend cut me off and said "yeah theodora basically lives in a rube goldberg machine" which is a formulation that has been slowly ruining my life ever since

check this out: we set up a gig service that lets you pay someone to do something for you. but because the request is being filtered through a heavily subsidized, extremely expensive frontier LLM, we can tell investors that we are building an "application programming interface, or API," and they wont realize it's Dumb Fiverr
