once again thinking about the vast amount of crime that has been enabled and incentivized by the existence of cryptocurrency :neobot_thinking:

Updated: Binance estimates its losses at ~$3B+, making this the largest exploit in crypto history — twice the size of 2025’s Bybit hack, now in second place. Binance blames a compromised devops laptop.

North Korea, also behind Bybit, is the suspected culprit.

@sophieschmieg @bnut @demofox the ultrafinitist opinion about computability is that the busy beaver would just get tired

Fans across the world mourn the passing of a true and irreplaceable legend. As Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Patrick Stewart took the starship Enterprise to places it had never gone before, and he inspired a whole next generation of star-gazers who looked longingly ahead to a brighter future for all humanity. Our hearts are heavy, indeed. Rest in the heavens, Captain.

@soatok in retrospect, I suspect Dual_EC_DRBG was deliberately botched by the technicals after failing to persuade management that what they were asking for was wildly unethical and dangerous even by spy agency standards

@soatok You're exaggerating about the Snowden disclosures, I recommend Electrospaces his blog about this topic:

https://www.electrospaces.net/2023/06/on-10th-anniversary-of-snowden.html

to quote the section about PRISM:

> The most controversial part of these stories was the claim that "the National Security Agency has obtained direct access to the systems of Google, Facebook, Apple and other US internet giants", which those companies vigorously denied.

> That "direct access" was taken from one of the slides, but it's unclear why both Gellman and Greenwald stuck to the most simple interpretation of it. Fact is that they had access to the extensive accompanying speaker's notes, which clearly said: "PRISM access is 100% dependent on ISP provisioning".*

Your Cryptography Conspiracy Theory Is Wrong

@sophieschmieg remember that attacks always get better. It'll be down to 10^(10^7) in no time

California Proposition 41 and 42 advocates are dirty and misleading.

TLDR: prop 40 is a one-time billionaire wealth tax that exempts retirement savings and 401k. Roth IRAs are exempt up to $10 million.

Props 41 and 42 are attempting to block 40 by prohibiting wealth taxes. Their advocates are blatantly misleading voters by implying or saying that prop 40 or future wealth taxes may tax retirement savings.

The Anthropic ETH algorithm apparently needs more than 10^(10^8) variables in order to be better than brute force search.

That means, being an Ultrafinitist pays off again, I simply do not believe this number is real, so it cannot hurt me.
