@lumi I wanted to give some benefit of the doubt when I noticed someone with a number of years using them in a fairly proficient manner.

My regular observations with students was that the decline was pretty clear but with an expert it was not so much so I was pondering "Okay, maybe this is reasonable?"

Then tick 2 months and you start noticing they are getting slower, they are struggling to keep up with peers who aren't using them - consistency problems set in.

4 months in - they are very slow and they recognise the issues as well and they lean harder into it but a couple of weeks and there is a proper "I think I need to get my shit together" moment.

They don't use it and they start getting their speed back but it almost takes the amount of time they lost to get their capabilities back.

also, i don't subscribe to notions of purity. if you've used llms before and reject them now, or only use then for work, or use them in your personal life but try to avoid them: i still support you!

no one is too far gone :neocat_heart:

i reject the tech, not the people

having used llms before for work, i have first hand experience of the effects they have on your mind, especially if you use them for creation (like writing code)

they're addictive gambling machines, even if you know they are. they can't be used responsibly. after stopping with their use for work, i noticed myself reaching for them. it took me months to fully recover. there was also very noticeable skill atrophy

i knew of the many issues, but these things work on your monkey brain, they're very hazardous

if you use them and you're not forced to use them, stop using them. they are not worth it in any way. if you can't stop using them for work, try to avoid them outside of work as much as possible. harm reduction is a valid strategy

this technology needs to be eliminated, there is no way to salvage it

and this is me focusing on the psychological issues, there are way more severe social and ethical issues with it

“If you don’t use AI you’re going to get left behind.”

Gosh, I sure hope so. I see where you’re going and it sucks.

The modern portrayal of the "Wild Hunt" often features a male "Wild Huntsman" as a hyper-masculine figure, possibly as an incarnation of Odin.

However, in my research of German folklore, I was surprised how often the Wild Hunt actually has a female leader. The goddess-figure Hulda/Holle/Perchta features in this role particularly often.

And when I publish a book on the Wild Hunt (currently planned as Volume 5 in my series), I definitely want a "Wild Huntswoman" on the cover.

#Spotted on Market Day in Aotearoa New Zealand

A man (80s?) with a prodigious bushy moustache takes a bite from a cream donut and SQUISH.
Cream covering his moustache and squootling up his nostrils.
His wife howling with laughter.

A tiny human (2?) is crouched next to a culvert, peering inside and pointing.
Asking Mum: "What's IN there?"
Mum says: "Probably some bugs."
Tiny Human Culvert Scientist looks offended at the lack of rigorous evidence to back up this statement. "NO MUM! There's not enough ROOM!"

A tiny human (1.5?) has got Dad's car keys in his hands and is off!
Toddle-galloping through the markets.
Dodging and weaving!
Chortling and giggling!
Will he get away?!
(Dad in hot pursuit!)

A young human (8?) is RACING through the markets.
Holding a paper bag out in front of him.
Expression urgent as he passes his Mum's stall while bellowing: "IT'S AN EMERGENCY! DAD NEEDS HIS COOKIE!"

A woman (60s?) is addressing a herd of ice-cream covered small humans (3-6?)
Hands on hips, she says: "Okay my little fraggles, how about we take you all to the park and wear you out?"
Little Fraggles think this is a marvellous idea.

Any typos spotted in this post are very much looking forward to the Ngatimoti Festival tomorrow. If typos spotted, they'll be happily munching a cookie they got at the markets. (It was an emergency!)

Why does Apache 2.4 (as packaged in Debian) allow POST to files like /index.htm by default?

Apache 1.3 blocks these (405 Method Not Allowed), and that is much more sensible.

Does anyone have a quick config snippet to make the former behave like the latter for regular files (i.e. without breaking POST to CGIs and the like)?

Do you require #kittens? Oh yes you do.

what all you find when you look through the user agent log… Återstod, a search engine… so far so good… that uses fashtech to summarise your site and stores/shows the slop summary… nope, go away

@david_chisnall If an old/amateur C coder who was also a beginner smalltalk enthusiast was interested in GNUStep on NetBSD, what books would you recommend that I could hunt around for on used book sites to get started on ObjectiveC and some of the frameworks involved?

There must be some older books that sit in the sweet spot of then-current Cocoa and ObjectiveC that GNUStep is contemporaneous with that would be well suited.

Any advice? Beginner level stuff probably best fit.
