3h agoI think I'm ready to return to writing, but I'm not ready to write in public again. Paper it is.

- God Emperor of Mastodon (new account)michal@sapka.pl3h agoThey are installing fiber FTH at my building for a new upstairs neighbor. 3 years ago I would be jealous and most likely end with one myself. Now I don't give a rat's ass.
The only downside is a huge modem/router/wifi box I use in bridge mode. - God Emperor of Mastodon (new account)michal@sapka.pl4h agoretooted Dave Fischer

Once again, my professional recommendation in response to the latest Linux kernel vulnerability in the news is that you should gather up all your electronic devices, cast them into the sea, and retreat to the woods.
Each night, gather your children and tell them tales of the Before Times when the hubris of humanity grew so large that we made idols of sand and spoke to them as equals. Remind them that the sand, of course, did not speak or think, but we imagined it could, and let it guide us to folly.
Should a stranger ever come to your village with a glowing rectangle, encourage the youth to beat them with sticks.
- God Emperor of Mastodon (new account)michal@sapka.pl9h agoFriends, please keep yourself to a higher standard and not repeat lies.
Antropic didn't lose 80 billion in the last quarter. Their operating loss is "only" 8 bn (it's crazy to say "only," I know). The rest of their loss is how much their shares promissed to other entities (like Microsoft) grew in value. 72bn is the hypothetical value of how much more they would need to pay then to rebuy the stock. It's a good thing for them, actually, and this is why money is meaningless and Wall Street is a huge joke played on all of us.

Level 1: Screw instant messaging, write an email,
Level 2: Screw email, write a snail mail.
I have no idea where phone calls fit into that. Or in-person visits, to be honest. - God Emperor of Mastodon (new account)michal@sapka.pl10h ago

I finally know why most fonts are broken, and it's difficult to distinguish 1 l and I.
On a portable typewriter, quite often there was not "1". Number rows started at 2, and where 1 would be, a key to ignore margins was. So how did they write "1"? That's what lowercase "L" was for.

#music #violin #ukraine - God Emperor of Mastodon (new account)michal@sapka.pl10/19/2026... or ssh into, and generate a token yourself? ;p
- God Emperor of Mastodon (new account)michal@sapka.pl10/19/2026I'm thinking of doing a unique-token for each of my reader, so you https://your-token.michal.sapka.pl and can access the site without any problems, RSS and all. If, however anyone reaches ..invalid-token, they get permabanned. For giggles, anyone can generate new token and be "invited by".
This way readers still can get access, I regain the ability to write for humans (not for bots), and there will be a special "share" link with title + info how to get token.
This is just an idea. Think if the token as your unique telephone number to call into a bbs, as I don't want to salt passwords and handle session token in cookies.
I stopped writing as I'm tired of writnig for bots... - God Emperor of Mastodon (new account)michal@sapka.pl10/19/2026

I just read “The Internet is a store but it used to be a library” on BlueSky and now my mood is even worse than it was before.

Moved our git web server from cgit to stagit to reduce load on the server caused by crawlers, as it only uses static files.
https://git.dillo-browser.org/dillo/
Roughly 99.9% of requests are bots fetching commits and files over and over again at a rate of 50 req/s despite our robots.txt excluding any crawler. Stagit only exposes a small number of files and commits so they are not reachable to bots.
Sadly, many anti-bot protections rely on JS or fingerprinting which come with their own set of problems.
- God Emperor of Mastodon (new account)michal@sapka.pl10/16/2026I don't know if this is important, but IIRC Linux Foundation pays Linus for his work on Linux, and the Foundation is very much into LLM bots.
