When any of the AI companies claims they have done something New! Groundbreaking! Amazing! maybe, just maybe, they are lying.
I'd love it if everybody -- but especially tech press -- remembered this.
This analysis is fascinating: it breaks down how when you fill up a petrol car most of the energy never moves it.
Petrol car: 13–21% of the crude oil's energy reaches wheels.
Electric car on today's UK grid: 43–45%.
Electric car on wind+solar: 77–80%.

Money people are very clever and extremely rational, which is why the only companies whose share values aren't falling through the floor are the ones who have made enormous losses for the entire time that they've been doing what they're doing. This is cool and normal and if you think otherwise you're just not smart enough to understand the importance of Number Go Up.
If anybody reads this OpenAI post and thinks AI found a zero day - no. This one was patched months ago, not found by OpenAI, and reported by an old-school fuzzer.
This analyst's report from Apollo about AI uses the term "S&P 493" to refer to the "S&P 500 minus the Mag 7" - because if you take out the AI companies, the S&P 500 is tanking. https://www.apollo.com/wealth/insights-news/insights/daily-spark/no-signs-of-ai-payoff-outside-the-tech-sector

BTW I think that, in large part due to the breakneck speed of "news" these days, plus the engagement-hunting need for everything to be New & Breaking™️ all the time, there's a tendency for journalists to forego the question "When did this start?" in favor of just assuming [thing] started when the journalist first heard of it...
Advice for female-presenting persons: if a male doctor asks if you've been under stress lately: SAY NO. Tell him life is great. Don't budge. Make the fucker actually figure out what's wrong.
I don't know a single woman who hasn't gotten the stress brush-off, only to get a real diagnosis later.
It's bullshit. Sometimes lying to your doctor is the right thing to do.
New Saturn capture! Just a few days after my last attempt, I revisited the ringed planet (Saturn) for the first time with the Baader IR-Pass 685nm filter.

I combined the 685nm luminance channel with a native RGB from the UV/IR Cut. Shot at 4500mm, f/22.5, from Koblenz. Full details on Astrobin:

For the record, the Uncanny Valley is about something that looks like it should be a living person, but isn't.
In other words, the form is there but the content the form implies, the actual person, is absent.
Thinking that this is purely an aesthetic issue misses the point entirely: We are clearly mentally & emotionally hardwired to reject things that pretend to have intent but don't - we instinctively categorize them as dangerous, even hostile.
