Break into a nuclear wessel today in memory of Walter. As good a villain as a hero.

Just consuming this bit of tasty #BBCmicro history, in which two uni students create the first "true" #3D game (defined in the video as "xyz tracking for player and all objects," differentiating from contemporaries like Battlezone and the arcade Star Wars, which were 3D vector graphics, but gameplay was "on rails").

Just as fascinating to me, an 8-bit kid but not from the UK, is the short history of the BBC Micro itself. True public service. Good job, 1970s BBC.

But having spent considerable time in the 90s playing Xwing, Tie Fighter, etc, this story of what was done on a system with the same CPU as the C64, at the time, is really quite mindblowing.

I will probably have more thoughts about this but gotta get chorin'

edit: ok two quick thoughts

First off, this video includes the line "that resistor simulates an engineer's finger on the board - it wouldn't boot without it, and to this day nobody knows exactly what it does."

Also, I find the graphics, particularly the edges, fascinating. This machine didn't have "fuzzy logic" about whether to light a pixel or not, and I think the edges of objects, the weird details, reveal some kind of extremely lean rendering routines.

The term 'rando' is an homage to Ayn Rand, the patron saint of reply guys.

Again, sad news from the world of the arts.

He was great in Star Trek, but for me in later years he was Bester in Babylon 5, the villain you loved to hate, and he did it oh so well. Thanks for the memories.

Dear software companies:

I do not want an Experience. I want to do the thing I launched your program to do and then move on with my fucking life. I do not want to remember how your software felt to use. I want to remember the Work I did while using your software.

You are not designing an amusement park. You are designing a tool. My screwdriver is not an Experience. Building this furniture is an Experience.

Having contemporaneously owned the vinyl, I'm revisiting Billy Idol's first album this afternoon while I play with my table saw a little. Might post a pic later but it's nothing pretty or exciting - I own a tire dolly and I'm making a wood thing that makes it into a general purpose dolly. Been putting it off for twenty years, and I have a pile of bricks to move once I finish the wooden thing.

Anyways, there's a lot of songs on here, the singles basically, that I attempted to live by, and a lot that never really registered in my psyche much at all.

Today's insight is, I have in the last few years gotten into Roxy Music at the album level, and these songs I had previously ignored, well,

Billy was clearly a young punker working out his Bryan Ferry issues, if you get me.

The teen is going to a “corvid party” today and they’re going to do a trinket swap and I’m intensely jealous because OMG how fun does that sound?!? It sounds like maybe the older teen version of a Halloween party? I have no idea. Kids are alright.

There’s an old story about a child picking up starfish that have washed up on the beach and putting them back in the ocean. A passerby points out this won’t matter, because there are thousands of them. The kid holds one up and says, “Well, it matters to this one.”

I grow tired of arguing with people on the internet who won’t save any starfish if we can’t save them all. Who willfully conflate “This won’t solve everything” with “This changes nothing.”

(This post is not actually about starfish.)

So hey, #BritishColumbia, in case you don't know what a conservative supermajority can do, here's some info from the other side of the country:

• Cut the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) by 1%. Sounds good, but wait, there's more

• Removed tolls from the two bridges in Halifax. Sounds good, but wait, there's more

• Spent $1.9 billion outside of the budget. Well, that's not so good, huh

• Tried to give itself the power to fire the Auditor General

• Made massive cuts to the nonprofit sector in March, including community support organizations, with more cuts to come because there's a big deficit

• Repealed the ban on uranium mining

• Has begun pre-construction of an AI data centre without public consultation or an environmental assessment, planning to lease it to Anthropic

And there is far, far more. So good luck, I guess.

Just watched Naomi Klein take Piers Morgan apart.

The numbskull's opening gambit is that to use the word fascist is to belittle the victims of "real" fascism, which in his world means something that looks exactly like Hitler.

Now Klein has been doing this for a long time. All those years that Morgan was test driving luxury autos on Top Gear and opining on the sound of the door closing and which had the quietest highway ride, she was doing political and social analysis. His rhetorical technique is straight up childish and naive. So she takes that apart completely.

And then towards the end, after piously chiding Klein for her misuse of the word, he goes ahead and belittles all those Hitler victims himself by talking about "deep left fascism," which is not even a thing.

She stays classy by talking about the actual Bad History of the left: Stalin, Mao, Cultural Revolution, etc, and uses the correct terms for them, as these are left wing atrocities that we leftists must reckon with. And in so doing, reveals to any thinking person just how little of a grasp Morgan has, on history, on politics, on anything. It's just beautiful.

Good lord, do I want to have dinner at the Klein/Lewis residence.

I have vague memories back from early 00s of how they quantified the damage caused by 'spam king' and others of that ilk, based on the humans lives wasted reading meaningless text-like symbol streams. I sometimes imagine that being applied today.

I just used the shoehorn to put on a pair of Crocs. Still feel fit to run the csprng at eMudrah.
