On my walk back from voting, I saw an American persimmon tree I had never noticed before in a public park. It’s the tallest and oldest Am persimmon I’ve ever seen, it has to be over 40ft.

The fruit has strong notes of cinnamon and honey. Unfortunately the branches are too high to take a scion for grafting but I collected two fruits to save seeds.

This feels like a sign.

available in the US are bell beans (a type of fava), Vicia faba which are cold hardy to -12C but some people have an intolerance to fava beans.

Hodmedods sells them as “Carlin peas” but there is no lowest growing temperature. They look like and are cooked like chickpeas but are unrelated. I think in most languages it’s referred to simply as winter pea.

Anyway, I’m looking for a distributor who could ship to the US and the pea has a definite cold tolerance to at least -10C.

Thank you! 💚💚💚

Asking EU gardeners: 1/2 🧵

I’m looking for a specific winter pea, Pisum sativum that is cold hardy to at least -10C. It used to be grown throughout Europe during fall/winter and was part of European diet but nowadays is just grown for animal fodder.

I want to grow and distribute this as part of my food security in climate change project where I give out seeds for food security. Currently the only cold-hardy bean commercially

Harvest today. Citrus are ripening 😊

Halloween tradition: passing out fruit and veg seeds. Since the fertilizer/oil shortages are likely to affect food security, I passed out 10 varieties of seeds to grow throughout the year. It took me all month to collect, pack and label. I made 20 bags and was able to pass out 17 to different families. (Last year it was only 15).

This is part of my food security in climate change project.

Seeds:
Bell beans
Marshmallow
Maypop
Meadow beauty
Nkruma Tenten okra
Papalo
Red cardinal flower
Physalis grisea
Royal burgundy beans
Tepary beans

The only thing that is not edible is the cardinal flower. I put that in there bc it attracts hummingbirds and everyone likes that.

For some reason, ppl don’t know that marshmallow leaf is edible. You get a lot more out of the plant if you grow it for the leaves than for its roots. Same with okra.

Seed grown feijoa results. I have two trees grown from seed and they taste and look different. One is more oval/circular shaped and the other oblong.

The oval shaped tastes the best. It tastes like cattleya guava and muscadine grapes and is quite juicy and succulent. It’s better than my pink guava. I’ve named it “chubby baby.”

The oblong one tastes like green apple and the peel is kinda resin-y.

I grafted 8 yuzu seedling stocks with mature yuzu scions this spring but they’re unlikely to produce for at least two years.

One day I will be yuzu rich and will never suffer for want of yuzus again.

It was a bad year for yuzus. My tree isn’t very big and squirrels stole two fruit off of it last spring when they were still small and green. The result is that the one yuzu that ripened is a total honker.

The other yuzu is from a friend’s tree. His trees are alternate bearing bc he doesn’t thin the fruit in boom years. Yuzu tea from dried yuzu peel is a biological imperative so I will be bereft this year.

Harvest today. Citrus are starting to ripen. Maybe next week satsumas will be ready. 😊

Mexican startup, Greenfluidics produces a solar panel made with certain strains of algae, water and photovoltaic cells. The panels generate energy AND capture CO2. For every 1kg of algae, 2k of carbon will be captured. The biomass created are periodically filtered and can be used as fertilizer. As for energy, it produces comparable rates to current solar panels some of which is used to keep the installation going.

Israel is not just committing genocide of people but also cultural and ecological genocide. 90% of Palestinian olive trees have been destroyed in the last few years, farms and livelihoods destroyed. A network of Palestinians and allies seeks to preserve Palestinian heirloom seeds and cultural heritage. See below to support this group, order seeds, raise awareness and offer to be a seed saver.

🌎 Earth: A new cross‑continental study highlights how Indigenous stewardship practices, from sacred‑site protection to sustainable harvesting and cultural fire‑watching, actively strengthen biodiversity, carbon storage, and ecosystem resilience.

🔥 These practices work because they maintain ecological balance through protocols refined over generations. Healthy Indigenous‑managed lands store vast amounts of carbon, reducing climate‑related economic losses while protecting forests, wildlife, and waters.

🤝 49 Indigenous leaders across 6 continents shaped the findings, grounding the research in lived knowledge, cultural identity, and community‑rooted land care.

I grew this pomegranate from seed!!

Its parent was “California White.” Pomegranates don’t come true from seed but seeds don’t produce vastly inferior fruit like the way apples do.

Obviously this is no where close to being a white pomegranate so I get naming rights. What should I call it? Was thinking

Sparkle Unicorn

Devil’s claw update (Proboscidea louisianica)

Plants are recovering after bunnies rampaged the raised bed and I finally got some young pods after saving seeds for next year.

Recipe: Turtle Isand by Sean Sherman p.169.

They have a bitter flavor similar (but less in your face) to white bitter melon. Also tasted like peanut+toasted coconut / toasted white poppy seeds. The salt definitely moderates the bitterness.

I mentioned before the pods and plants smell like sweaty gym socks - this completely disappears in cooking.

@delve has mentioned lacto-fermentation with salt gets rid of the bitterness. I haven’t tried this yet and probably won’t have a chance until next year.

Nkruma Tenten okra flowers are mesmerizingly beautiful.

Common evening primrose, Oenothera biennis

A favorite fall food for birds. They love the seeds and perch on the stems to pry open the pods. This plant blooms summer to first frost. It is also edible for humans: leaves, flowers, seeds and roots (in early spring).

Leaves can be dried for winter storage and have a tea-ish flavor. The roots stay well in the fridge and a sweet with carrot-parsnip flavor.
