YOLO, I'm going to migrate this account now.

@geniodiabolico Like, I want to say hate speech is disallowed. Does that mean I disallow posting pictures of guillotines in a discussion of billionaires? It is exceedingly difficult to pin down more specifically than "I know it when I see it."

Since this is my instance under my control for a small population, I'm considering just saying "It's my house and when in doubt what I say goes. Grandma rules apply here."

Writing the server rules for this new instance is hard. I need to reach deep and find my inner lawyer.

I don't use AI for anything. If I did, I might use it to generate the Winter Soldier activation scene except the code phrase is "4, 56, 66, 115, 155, 156, 230, 237"

Although the 8 numbers together are too much complexity for the situation. Maybe just "4".

@geniodiabolico I want to create my #Fedihost instance in the next 24 hours. Still looking for a referral code. If I do this without one, we're leaving $40 on the table. Help me help you.

RE: https://mastodon.social/@indivisibleteam/117474105589689934

Yes, write congress but also

DELETE YOUR FUCKING FACEBOOK ACCOUNT! THEY WILL NEVER STOP DOING THIS SHIT TO YOU, EVER!

I am looking to create an account on #Fedihost in the next week. If someone wants to earn the $20 by giving me their referral discount code, I'm happy to accept it.

I have the concept of a plan. I am floating the idea amongst my core loyal podcast listeners of creating a Mastodon server around my show. I am looking to get it out of my house. This account has been a good bridge after the Hackerspace account went kaput but it's always felt a bit tenuous.

Initial requests for input have shown about one hands worth of people in the first few hours. I'm pretty sure I'm going to do it. The questions are where and how big of an account?

The one thing that might be a bummer is that in my Docker container I have a script that patches the two files that ups my character limit to 5000. I'm not sure if any of the hosts I first consider have access down to the actual code level of the process. You are paying them to hide that kind of thing.

Anyone running a hosted Mastodon server that they are able to increase the character limits on?

I protested a Lindsey Graham event which he later dismissed as being paid for by George Soros. Of course it was a lie but there is a reason Republicans always think protestors are paid. Because that's how they get theirs.

@jared is gone, long live Jared W Smith.

I forget the year, 2007? 2008? BlogHer was going to partner with ConvergeSouth in Greensboro NC. CS would have a one day conference focusing on reportage and civic engagement on a Friday and BlogHer would have a day about tech topics on the Saturday in the same space with a shared ticket. A few weeks before the event, BlogHer wasn't happy with presales so they canceled their part of the event.

Kelby Carr of Type-A Parent and I jumped in to organize a replacement event. We split up the day. She programmed the morning and I did the afternoon. I got Mur Lafferty to come over from Durham to keynote my half, but the very first call I made was to Jared Smith. He enthusiastically volunteered to do a session on chromakey (not nearly as common back then.) He brought a big portable green screen, showed how he used it in his broadcasts and then left it up. Anyone interested could take some footage with their own devices and take it back home to play with it. It was fun and it really energized the room.

That was my experience with Jared. He was a ball of infectious energy. Every single CREATE South that we held in Myrtle Beach, Jared presented at. He showed up whenever we asked and sometimes without being asked. Although he focused on Charleston weather he was one of my sources whenever a big system approached the coast. He was a great guy.

I hadn't seen him in person in a long time. He was one of my first follows when I joined Mastodon because of course he was already here. He was such a fixture of the coastal SC grassroots tech scene that it is hard to think about it without him. A bright light has gone out.

Update: Thanks to @patrickokeefe for pointing his contemporaneous blog reporting that points out most of these facts are wrong.

https://www.managingcommunities.com/2008/11/01/convergesouth-2008-and-the-independent-blogging-conference-at-greensboro-recap/

Don did the session I was thinking about, and Jared was Kelby's first call not mine. The truth that remains is that Jared was an enthusiastic force of nature who showed up at event in Charleston, at ours in Myrtle Beach and as far away as Greensboro. When energy flagged, you could count on him to buoy things up.

If this doesn't show true colors, I don't know what will. #NoKings went out to the streets to show the power of collective action. Do the same with your internet life. Delete your Facebook account. If a million people do that, Meta will notice. Hit them in the only thing they care about, their wallet.

Back when I was working at my second-to-last job and looking to leave it, I applied for the position of developer advocate at Gradle. They wanted me to prepare a 30 minute presentation on one aspect of the tool and present it as part of the interview. That was fantastic with me. I always prefer doing the thing in the hiring process rather than talking about how well I do the thing.

Over a weekend I set up Gradle, found a project on Github that was built with it in the Goldilocks zone - not too big and complex, not too small and simple. Having set up everything, I got out my legal pad and started building and taking notes.

Everything from this moment forward was a shitshow. I found dealing with the tool such an incredible pain in the ass, from getting started docs that were just plain incorrect to output that didn't match anything expected. Bear in mind, the job I was applying for would include improving this experience. By the end of the weekend I decided whoever would make this better would be someone who was not me. Sunday night I emailed the recruiter to drop out.

Monday morning she called me. She said she understood and wasn't going to ask me to reconsider. What she wanted to know is why right now? She told me I was the fourth candidate to make it past the first screener but withdraw their candidacy at exactly this point. I said it was because this is when you had to actually use the tool and understand what the delta was that you were walking into. Everything before was theoretical, but after this point the reality was impossible to ignore.

I just looked at a getting started guide for a framework that has setup guides for both Gradle and Maven. I was not tempted for one second to go with the former. It did make me think about this story though. Someone probably did take that job and I hope they made things better. If you like Gradle, go with god but I ain't touching it.

Just for my own sanity, any time any fediverse post of mine gains enough traction to be seen by 3rd party strangers and they comment to it with any of:

- why do you care about X instead of Y
- you aren't going far enough
- any form of insult or generalized negativity

I just fucking mute and/or block them. Am I being a thin-skinned prima donna? Probably but guess what - the world presents more than enough bum out energy on an hourly basis. I certainly don't need to cultivate more on Mastodon. Or anywhere.

I am truly perplexed by the worldwide appeal of the #Traitors shows. In this household we watch all six (and counting) of the English language versions. I say "we" but I either leave the room or put on headphones because I hate this show with a white hot passion.

Our entire lives are filled with people lying to our faces for their own material gain. Who needs more of that in their entertainment? Does having underpaid PAs in weird robes and dollar store masks somehow generate an appeal for people? I find the whole package unappealing and unwatchable.

@geniodiabolico Also, I am sufficiently anal that when I accidentally posted this from my science fiction account, I deleted it and posted it anew from my tech account. Literally no one cares in the world but me.

RE: https://meow.social/@chirpbirb/117320837073985044

When this happens in my office, it is simultaneously the best and worst thing that can happen.

It's the best because I needed a thing, already had it and was able to lay hands on it.

It's the worst because it justifies my filling my spaces with old obsolete bullshit because one day 0.1% of it might be useful.

#packrat #oldtech

Every podcaster I hear: "Rate my podcast, it will help us grow!"

But what if - hear me out - you don't grow? Then what? Why do you think you need to grow? Do you have shareholders to appease? What if you already have every listener you will ever have? Is that not enough for you?

It's an unquestioned article of faith that every endeavor needs to be growing at all times. Because ... capitalism I guess? I don't actually believe that is true for my #podcast or for yours either. So no I won't be rating it.

RE: https://dice.camp/@doyce/117224477061183017

This is exactly so. One of the most insidious ingrained notions of capitalism is this notion you owe the world an ambient level of productivity.

The main project of my retirement is retraining myself away from that idea. It's not that indolence is the goal, but removing the obligation from my day, the free-floating anxiety that I'm "not getting anything done" by only enjoying myself. Passing the day in a pleasant way is goal enough. If I get something done that needs doing, that is great. However if I don't that doesn't mark the day as a loss, only one where the productivity is measured in satisfaction rather than worldly output.

RE: https://floss.social/@CoMaps/117190780930171089

I started using CoMaps because I was looking for an alternative to the enshittification of Waze/Google Maps (before the current situation). I like it but found it missing a lot of places in my area.

So I've been making a very me-centric set of updates in my town. If I go to a place and it is not in there, I edit #OpenStreetMap so that it is. Slowly I am seeing CoMaps populate with the places I added. It's honestly quite fun.

Sitting down to watch the wildcard final with the Bulldogs and #Magpies. I need to get this watched quick before the world spoils the results for me. Not that it's that hard to avoid in the USA but there are still ways to accidentally find information I don't want to know.
