Researchers at TrendAI concluded the Israeli company Discover-Tech was one of the biggest sources of digital ads shown to users of SpaceX's Starlink service and that the ads were likely being used to geolocate or otherwise surveil them.
the last of the two Christchurch girls who committed murder (which Peter Jackson much later covered in his early film, Heavenly Creatures), passes away in Orkney https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cwj3425g5381o
Always found it peculiar that, of all things, the other girl, under her new identity, became a best-selling crime fiction writer. Life is strange
I am a doctor. I wish that I could prescribe dildos to people. We could in the Victorian era. The amount of people these days getting random household objects stuck in their arses is getting ridiculous. Please, you're an adult, just get a proper and safe dildo, for fuck's sake.
#CCTV should always be in UTC. What amazes me is that police officers, even those dealing with CCTV, do not actually understand UTC or time zones.
Yes, helping police with their enquiries, and yes it is no secret a bank was robbed at 01:45 yesterday. But *which* 01:45 yesterday, there were two of them :-)
They also asked how accurate the time was - I then explained #GPS time servers.
I had to explain it all. Shame the footage was mostly useless, night time, lights, no chance of number plate.
Missed this at the weekend, the UK Government has pledged £1.94mn to the Wildlife Trust's Rothbury Appeal. Incredible!
I know how they feel, I just got a grant for £1,200 for some bird ringing equipment

One of the problems I see with modern portrayals of old folk tales is that there is a tendency of turning into neat "packages" - one single, "definite" version of a story with a clear beginning and end for easy consumption of an audience that will not know the context of the original storytellers. The Brothers Grimm themselves were part of this trend, with their repeated "cleaning" of their fairy tales collection, but many of their successors hardly did better.
Real folk tales and real folklore is considerably messier, with countless variants and narratives mutating and merging into each other. A good example is the text I am currently translating, featuring a particular crumbling well in the #Aargau canton of #Switzerland . This well has an entire myth-cycle associated it, with variant tales in neighboring villages. These range from the Devil lurking down there as a treasure guardian, to the Wild Hunt, to a vast sunken Roman city. These tales are messy and confusing, but that's what makes them so fascinating to me.
In modern media and storytelling, the closest we come to this is #fanfiction . Published media - whether books, movies, or television/streaming series - have their own "canon" events and stories, and fans obsessing over canon. But fanfiction writers make all of this their own, and weave their own contradictory stories with their own lore out of this base - just like the oral folk storytellers of old.
oh right so games/software can be decompiled/cloned at will and nobody did anything; but it takes 1 person trying to remove spyware from their TV OS and they got banned. I am not surprised obviously. Honestly if this is the type of stuff someone is using those tools go for it. They could disappear for all I care, but if the tools exist, show 'em. source: https://bsky.app/profile/esqueer.net/post/3myphka2iyk2o
Well this is eleventy-million kinds of Fucked Up. LA Times (who once contracted with me as a freelance reviewer and whom I struggled to get paid by) asserts that *merely reading its website* constitutes a permanent waiver of your right to sue it under *any circumstances*. This means that freelancers like me who read the website would lose the right to sue the company if we got stiffed. #consenttheater #bindingarbitration #dickovers

Here's a three step starter pack:
1. Welcome and integration for immigrants
2. Devolution of real power from the center to regions
3. Wind, solar, storage.

Finally we have created the random number "4" from the famous XKCD strip "do not just make your random number 4"

"My eleven-year-old daughter has cancer, and while I love her very much, I am struggling to justify the expense of her chemotherapy when the same money could be used to improve the welfare of tens of millions of farmed shrimp. This is an uncomfortable conclusion, and I want to emphasize that I did not arrive at it lightly …"
A masterpiece of longtermist rightthink! You read. Doubleplusgood rationalism!
I'm going to get an Internet connected camera pointed at the oven so when I get the fear that I've gone out and left the gas on, I can just check instead of having to reason my way out.
