Gonna sound like an old, but... I remember when 15% was a good sit-down restaurant tip, 10% for "meh" service, 20% "I want to impress my date with my generosity".
Having a Square reader ask me to pick between 18%, 22%, or 25% at a coffee kiosk is tip-culture inflation at work.
Wife and I are watching "Alien" (1979) and it's hilarious how the entire movie could just have been titled "Stuff would have been fine if any of the men on the ship were willing to listen to a woman" LOL
Three modern annoyances that I'm actually quite happy to suffer through because I know how severe the consequences they're mitigating are:
1) Flight delays to fix mechanical issues
2) Power outages because wildfire safety mechanisms tripped
3) Getting vaccines
A helpful math formula for your operational folks:
Training = Practice+ Feedback
If you're one of the majority of men who aren't all men this week, one place that might be good to support is "Futures Without Violence" who have an extremely highly-rated program called "Coaching Boys Into Men" that has actual study-backed positive effects at teaching adolescent boys about consent.
Every government and big business who insists on "sovereign" cloud data where the data stays geographically in their country should look at this and understand that you're demanding a cloud with less reliability.
Do they make a fitbit/smartwatch yet that can tell you're stressing out and start buzzing to remind you to breathe deeply and pet a dog for a few minutes? I'd buy one for each wrist.
I was invited to a very fancy restaurant yesterday for dinner, and I think I now understand why rich people still seem to be so unhappy.
Dessert was one square inch of cake, with gold leaf on it. And everyone had to pretend that they were super happy about that.
Every time I'm listening to YouTube Music on random and an AI-generated song pops up, I get the creepy feeling that I'm experiencing the versificator from 1984 in action.
I love being able to code faster but I could do without uncanny-valley machine generated covers of 80s hits.
I applaud sites/services who try to go "Passwordless" for security reasons but PLEASE, I'm begging y'all: Stop going passwordless with "We'll email/text you a sign-in confirmation every time you sign in". This adds a bunch of useless friction to an already-solved problem! Either let my password manager handle my business, or implement passkeys. I don't want to have to swap apps, copy-paste (or remember random digits), swap back, type things in, and hit buttons to complete my login.
Related: If none of my future grandkids plays cello I will have to figure out how to pass mine down to someone who will love to play it.
I've discovered that I am a sucker for videos where a musician's kid plays their work (and on their instrument!). Shane Hawkins at his dad's memorial, Jason Bonham @ Kennedy center, Lukas Nelson, etc. I love these performances <3
I just gently handled a Byrna pepper ball which got too old and had a teeeny bit of the powder seep out a crack and onto the ball. I am now coughing, snotty, and sneezing. Would hate to have a cloud of this stuff in my face.
Last night a human driver ran over & killed a person in a clearly marked crosswalk in my town, while that person had a walk signal.
It would be good if this person's death was as meaningful to the "ban waymos!" Community as the hypothetical risk of someone being hurt in the future.
