Sooo elated to see my home state of Texas, turned BLUE! Crying tears of joy! 🥲🥰

Well, well, well. Look who’s turning blue! 💙💙💙

Halloween tradition: passing out fruit and veg seeds. Since the fertilizer/oil shortages are likely to affect food security, I passed out 10 varieties of seeds to grow throughout the year. It took me all month to collect, pack and label. I made 20 bags and was able to pass out 17 to different families. (Last year it was only 15).

This is part of my food security in climate change project.

The Rubin Observatory in Chile is an accidental art machine.

It is gearing up to produce a 10-year, high-def movie of the entire universe. But along the way, it's returning beautiful images like this one of the Seagull Nebula in the constellation Monoceros.

Starting in one hour! Join No Kings to talk about the final push for voter turnout, as well as what happens post-election: how we're preparing for election enforcement, how you can start to plan now to be ready to protect the results of the election. RSVP at bit.ly/whatsnext1021.

Folks who live in Arizona, if you missed the message from the NWS because they inexplicably posted it on Xitter, you are about to get hit with some strong storms. Flooding, damaging winds, and even large hail, are all possible. Some of it will start tonight, but the main event starts tomorrow morning, especially for south-cemtral and eastern AZ.

Connect the dots.

A note for #Macron who's deluded enough to believe his gesturing in the direction of #Ukraine will cement his legacy in the eyes of the world: what the world is finally seeing is the mindblowing disregard he's always had for the people he was elected to represent. The ultra #capitalism he's actively encouraged, the #media takeover by #farright supporting #oligarchs, the deliberate defunding of #education & the militarisation of the #police, are now for all to see.

I decided to finally get off my lazy ass, dust off my blog and write a new post. Where I ramble on about existential dread and how I'm avoiding that. Updating all of you on what I've been doing lately and what some of my plans are.

This week I handed my newsletter to the one and only Queen of Peat, ecologist Merritt Turetsky. Her big idea? Stop treating wet land as a problem to drain. Start seeing it as something to work with instead!

🌿 Good news: A new approach called paludiculture flips the script: instead of draining peatlands to farm them, it keeps them wet and grows what actually thrives there: cattails for insulation, sago for food, and much more.

🔥 Not-so-good news: When a peatland is drained, it turns from a carbon vault to carbon source. A single drained bog the size of Manhattan can release as much CO₂ as burning a few hundred thousand pounds of coal a day.

🐸 What you can do: Become a bog champion: visit a local wetland and learn what lives there, ask your garden store to drop peat-based compost, and back the groups working to protect peatlands! For more, check out Merritt's new book, Bogland.

This week, plan a visit to a wetland near you. We can’t protect what we don’t know and appreciate, and action begins the moment we start to care 💚
