Just a reminder that Minneapolis "liberals" are not united against Trumpism and ICE. There are a lot of wealthy fascists here who are lifelong Democrats. They reelected mayor Frey after the George Floyd rebellion. They love cops. It's not a small number.
I keep thinking about the Serbian kids I met doing refugee solidarity in Belgrade in 2015. They were completely disillusioned, terrified of the cops and the intractable mafia government. All their friends with any prospects at all were leaving for greener pastures. They said there would never be any street movement again, let alone one that would change anything.
Solidarity with the Serbian youth movement! This is a pivotal victory for the global fight against fascism and it's fuckin inspiring!

My strategy this year for curtailing college student AI use:
1) pen and paper midterms
2) emphasis on classroom discussion
3) in-class scaffolding for papers: write the thesis, outline, etc. by hand
4) short one-on-one meetings to discuss papers after submission
I'm not naive enough to think that these things totally prevent AI use. And it is hard if not impossible to do this in big classes (especially online). But I am pleased that it is resulting in students thinking and writing and discussing more than they would have otherwise.
