Wolves roam into Finnish villages after Google destroys 1,300 acres of forest for AI data centers — forest where wolf packs used to live is now an expanse of mud https://www.tomshardware.com/tech-industry/data-centers/wolves-roam-into-finnish-villages-after-google-destroys-1-300-acres-of-forest-for-ai-data-centers-forest-where-wolf-packs-used-to-live-are-now-an-expanse-of-mud
Throwback Saturday memory: there's something about Paris.
(This was taken from the high tower on the university campus).

This post is not getting enough tracking. So I'm upgrading it to from "worth a read" to "best thing you'll read on the internet today"!
On dark, windy nights like these, standing on the beach below the ruins of Kirkmaiden Church, as the waves lash the shore, you swear you can hear the wraith bell tolling from the depths of Luce Bay, calling another McCulloch to their fate.

Interesting study about squatting through history.
If you don't squat regularly...you lose the ability! All young children can squat without issue. Your ankle will lose it's natural flexibility.
They can study bones of past populations and know whether they were squatters
The invention and wide spread use of the chair literally changed our physiology.

Australia could learn from Canada and Carney. But we will not.
This analysis is fascinating: it breaks down how when you fill up a petrol car most of the energy never moves it.
Petrol car: 13–21% of the crude oil's energy reaches wheels.
Electric car on today's UK grid: 43–45%.
Electric car on wind+solar: 77–80%.

I have been looking for a graphic like this since listening to @janrosenow on #CleaningUp with Michael Liebriech on the energy fallacy a few weeks ago.

“If you don’t use AI you’re going to get left behind.”
Gosh, I sure hope so. I see where you’re going and it sucks.
Autumn mists, autumn colours. Dreich today in Strathspey but the rich colours are gorgeous. #autumn #Cairngorms
Apparently, my daughter was given an assignment to use generative #AI to create a poster / cover for A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court in her English class. She took offense to this and asked if she could just do the assignment by hand or digitally using one of her #art apps. She was told no. So, my daughter decided to take a stand and not do the assignment. We support her decision completely. Asking someone who lives for creating her own art to use AI and refusing to accept anything else is inexcusable.

So today some of the worst people on earth using the most environmentally destructive tools on earth brought down a huge part of the internet by exploiting a potential problem found many years ago in PHP which was previously not practical for anyone to exploit.
It only became "practical" to exploit this problem because "AI" came along to automate the boring and repetitive work required to do so. Absurd amounts of computing power were applied specifically to break into other peoples' websites.
Now the same people who are behind this are trying to pretend that they're heroes for finding an exploit.
"AI uncovers critical vulnerabilities", their headline reads. But the vulnerability was only made to be critical by the very same people as hide behind that headline.
Many thousands of websites are offline, many people are losing money, many thousands of people are working hard to try to patch or work around the problem, many small guys are finding it almost impossible to patch, and we're all supposed to be thankful to OpenAI and others involved ? Nah. Fuck off.
Everything about "AI" involves a lot of externalized costs, but I've still yet to see even a single positive thing that has been achieved by "AI". That has definitely not changed today.

After 12 years and 8 months, Russia still has not captured the Donbas.
But after 1 year and 9 months of Trump's second term they have already taken Washington.

More USA depravity
Priceless moment at the White House!
Trump misunderstands a question from one of his own loyalists, and then starts accusing her off being "fake news". She then quickly explains that she is from the Trump supporting Daily Wire.
Whoops.
