Linguists estimate that 50–90% of languages could be severely endangered by 2100. Technology and AI offer new ways to preserve and teach Indigenous languages.
This #NAIHM, ACM highlights Indigenous computer scientists and organizations using technology to preserve these languages for future generations.
Happy Birthday to George Boole, founder of Boolean Logic, who was born on this day in 1815.
In 1854, George Boole published An Investigation of the Laws of Thought, which introduced a mathematical system for expressing logical relationships using algebra. This system allowed concepts to be represented as true or false, and then manipulated using operations like AND, OR, and NOT.
Today, Boolean logic remains fundamental to computing.
Please join us in remembering Margaret Hamilton (1936–2026), whose pioneering work at NASA and MIT reshaped both spaceflight and software history. As lead software developer for the Apollo program, her priority scheduling code safely guided Apollo 11 to the lunar surface. An ACM Distinguished Member and Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient, her legacy in building ultra-reliable software lives on across the entire computing community. https://cacm.acm.org/news/in-memoriam-margaret-hamilton-1936-2026/
#OTD in #ComputingHistory in 1969, the first message was sent over what would become the Internet. UCLA student Charley Kline sent the message, “LO” to Bill Duvall at the Stanford Research Institute via ARPANET. The message was meant to read, “LOGIN” but the system crashed after just the first two letters. Even still, that brief message was a tremendous achievement that marked the beginning of networked communication as we know it. For more: https://www.acm.org/education/otd-in-computing-history
Philosophers and scientists have debated the idea of consciousness for centuries, to no clear conclusion. What are the defining characteristics of a conscious AI? Find out in the latest issue of our newsletter, "Queue: In Practice." https://buff.ly/JScP1fq
In this week’s People of ACM profile, we interview leading AI developer Chip Huyen. Huyen, who worked on ML toolings at NVIDIA, Snorkel AI, and Netflix, offers unique perspectives on the state of AI now, and where it is headed. Among other topics, she discusses her "Machine Learning Interviews Book," a practical guide for professionals navigating the job market.
