All of these companies ought to be charged rent for collecting, storing and exploiting our data. That is the capitalist way, and we're all good little capitalists now, apparently, if only because we have no choice in the matter.

A better option would be to regulate the sale of obtained data so it can only be used for its original purpose or original privacy scope, but both options appear to be unlikely.

Yes, agreed, and we're currently in a consent prison of our own making.

It was slightly tongue-in-cheek comment, but the reality of privacy protections and regulation is a data protection arms race that people are losing thanks to corporate influence on our governments.

Make them pay. It's the only thing they understand.

More reason to not let your data get recorded in the first place.

@KimSJ to be fair, I think it's not Spirit selling it, rather some aggressive bankruptcy trustee.

And tbh I'm glad in such case it's google buying it - it could have been worse, like Elon Musk and his BigBalls script kiddies.

Looking at the ongoing Wiki takeover, the same applies also to groups specifically formed for good purpose: If they do not have iron-clad structure to resist moneyed interests, they will either become worthless, or be suborned.
