    once again I am begging moderate libs who immediately concede the "chaos at the border" during biden's presidency explain what the fuck you are talking about. I don't even mean that as an open-borders advocate I am ideologically opposed to acknowledging some problems with lax immigration procedures, sometimes mass movements of humans create big logistical problems. but I literally don't know what events you are even referring to beyond a bunch of fake news stories about imagined "caravans"

    like from all these allusions I gather that _something_ happened in El Paso or some other border community that made a bunch of people mad and motivated even the latino population to shift right a bunch but:

    A) I still literally don't know what it was despite being informed to an unhealthy level, and
    B) it really seems like a lot of the electoral consequences of this landed in places like Idaho and Montana which does call into question its material immediacy

    was it just noise-machine bullshit?

    @drwho I don't even really know what the bullshit _is_, is the thing. they just kinda yadda-yadda-yadda over it every time it comes up

    @glyph The bullshit is what they say happened. Sweet fuck all. Nothing happened. But they want everyone to feel like bad things were happening so they evoke that vibe over and over.

    @glyph

    I work for a company involved in security, with some locations in El Paso. The people we deal with will rant about being close to the border and trouble from people crossing, but everyone we've had arrested for theft has been a local.

    @glyph Russian disinformation campaigns on social media? Of course it doesn't take the Russians, I remember the lies told about Vietnam; Reagans lies about welfare queens; Clinton's lies about crack. Somebody appeals to outrage with truthy but false stories that advance their agenda and civil society loses.

    @glyph Lately, it seems as if many progressive voices are railing against democratic party missteps that are largely Republican talking points. They don't seem to realize how many of their cries come from GOP propaganda rather than Democrat missteps or 'evil'
