the scarcest resource is give-a-shit. even something perfect will collapse if there's not enough give-a-shit to go around. the only reason anything works is because there's people in the background invisibly doing thankless labour to keep everything working. it's so hard to explain this point. I've heard people say it before I became a community organizer and was like "I guess that makes sense" but now that I've got all this experience it REALLY makes sense. I'm not sure how I'd explain this experience-backed understanding to myself from three years ago. probably impossible.

this labour is complex and varied and vacillates wildly between "onerously boring" and "emotionally harrowing." if you don't balance your books things will explode. if you don't mediate conflicts things will explode.

I've said this before but the more I do QCC the more respect I have for the people who ran cohost. it's harder to run something people love because the bar for give-a-shit is so high. at least for a shitty day job you can phone it in.

@suricrasia I volunteer for my scientific society. There are all sorts of election rules to prevent people from taking control of various groups within the society.

99% of the time we have the opposite problem of finding enough people to stand for election. Sometimes we have to have someone stand, but they leave their profile blank to ensure no one votes for them.
