The fiscal cost of implementation of this bill cannot be measured against the lives that have already been lost to inhuman conditions in privately run detention centers in our state.

Along with Senator Perez, I demand that SB 995 be released from committee and passed into law. As a duly elected official in California, you took an oath to defend the constitution. Many of the people being held in privately held detention centers in California have not been afforded their constitutional rights. As a state, we have the right to enforce state law with regard to public safety. You have a responsibility to our shared democracy to act in this matter.

Senator Sasha Perez was pushing a bill SB995, which would have given the California Public Health Department the ability to do health checks on all privately run detention centers. This is important because right now the inspections are being handled county by county. Some conservative counties aren't doing appropriate levels of inspection. This bill just died in appropriations committee, held there because someone wants it blocked. Senator Perez didn't see this coming because the bill had wide support. But she's not stopping because this bill is a life and death matter. This level of political murder has to stop now. She has two weeks to force the state to change position on this bill. She needs us to call both the governor's office and democratic state leadership. Without us pushing, it will take another year for a new bill to be introduced. In Adelanto, there are documented reports of fly larva in drinking water. In Nazi Germany, many of the prisoners died from being held in inhumane conditions. Friends, this is the fight today. We need to force corrupt politicians to make that bill law.

The fact that our airline attendants are holding the line, while our journalists call it an "immigration crack down" which sounds like we all went too far and dad is really really mad is very fucked up. Congratulations to airline attendants on holding on to their humanity.

These days, if you're not on the ground reporting human rights abuses or the power structure that is committing them, I consider you a "journalist."

At one point, in Dallas, a federal agent went so far as to try to board a plane in search of a target. But the Southwest Airlines gate agent reportedly refused to allow the officer to do so without a warrant signed by a judge, and airline employees blocked ICE from seeing a computer screen while passengers were boarding.

Southwest told the Wall Street Journal that it follows the law and has protocols “to ensure appropriate legal documentation is presented by law enforcement personnel before any information about customers is shared”

Still, hundreds of immigration arrests have already taken place at airports since the TSA and ICE began cooperating with one another last year. Members of the airline industry met with DHS in July to discuss their discomfort with the policy change.

On top of the immigrants being detained, experts have raised concerns that the tense encounters could lead to escalation and unsafe conditions for bystanders or airline employees.

“The actions that federal enforcement authorities have taken in our workplaces have raised glaring workplace, safety and legal concerns for flight attendants,” Sara Nelson, international president of the Association of Flight Attendants, wrote in a letter to carriers in March."

As concerns have spread throughout the community, residents have created a WhatsApp group where people share reports of suspected Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity to help keep neighbors informed.

Dumas’ friend, Ivy Rivera, helps manage the group. Despite criticism online that the alerts could interfere with immigration enforcement, Rivera said the goal is simply to keep families aware of what is happening around them.

“Everybody is scared and they don’t want to get taken, and I post it so they are alert and they are watching their surroundings,” Rivera said. “Family members can know if they’re at Whataburger and be like, ‘Hey, let’s go check up on them.'”

Rivera said the fear is affecting more than just people going to work. She said some home-based food vendors have seen fewer customers, while others are asking friends or relatives to run basic errands because they are afraid to leave their homes.

I'm in a private chat where people are trying to talk about mutual aid, to learn something. Which is great, and so many of us don't have an embodied understanding of what mutual aid means, including me.

The fact that so many people walk around thinking they know everything, not questioning foundational thinking that is propaganda to prop up capitalism is exhausting, though.

If you find yourself feeling like you have to defend the democratic party, or your insistence that you need to vet ppl before you give them money or goods, or the need for ai to get us out of this climate catastrophe, maybe ask yourself why you're defending something that causes harm.

I love them and wish I could take them in myself. But this is such a better outcome than anything I was hoping would be possible.

This is where we are at, people who can are helping and people who can't are asking. This is the part of life that gets forgotten in middle class experience acquisition. Working together gives us meaning.

Meanwhile, people stuck in detention who have been victimized by the political work of these bastards, are helping each other to find support. Some of them are getting out on habeas petitions. Others are making sure the people who don't have connections to someone outside are still seen and cared for.

The politicians want us afraid. If you're stuck at afraid, find a way to get involved. There's a beautiful world of care and connection growing. Yes, it is painful too. But it beats letting our days be frozen in fear.
