Confession time!

Friendos, I just thoughtlessly almost did something that I know better than to do. I am, genuinely, horrified and a smidge embarrassed. So I’m taking a minute to turn this into a teachable moment.

I was using a drill to make pilot holes for installing the handles on the kitchen cabinets I recently finished assembling. No big deal. What my derp-ass failed to do until the drill was actually running was realise that my hair wasn’t tied back. I almost *never* wear it loose, so it isn’t really something I usually have to think about! Which is still not a good excuse.

Now, if you have never had a safety brief by a handy relative or a gruff shop manager, lemme explain.

Any tool that turns under power can very quickly snag an errant strand and do some extremely bad damage to your look.

(Anyone who feels inclined to share a gruesome personal experience in the comments, please CW that appropriately for folx who may need to moderate their intake of that kinda detail.)

So in that spirit:

:yell: I’m your builder daddy now.

If you have long hair, pull it back completely. A long ponytail or braid that hangs over your shoulder isn’t safe enough.

If you have earrings that dangle, a necklace, a bracelet, or a ring on your finger. Take it off before you start.

It doesn’t take an industrial machine. Any basic DIY powertool that has a rotating element can mess you up.

Maybe you’re used to working with all the powertools, but for your whole life until recently you’ve worn your hair pretty short. Consider this part of the learning curve for dealing with long hair… along with maybe needing an assist opening jars. 👀 :anartrans_symbol_black: and I love this for you.

You can do this diy thing. Make stuff! Fix stuff! Seize the means and take back the commons! But please know your tools and use them safety.

I found a first member for my job search council, my older sister! She is also looking to make a change in her career.

Now that it is happening, I need to sort out collaboration tools. I will need video chat, text chat (ideally with channels/threads), and tools for sharing files. I want everything to be free and open source software. The challenge is that the people in my council may not be familiar with open source tools. Which are the easiest for groups to use?

I was extremely lucky to experience a total solar eclipse only a couple hours from my home in 2024. With the next one coming up tomorrow, I can see why people travel across the world to see it. I have such a yearning.

Tubeless setup has saved me a bunch of times so I didn’t have to change inner tubes by the road, but damn it can be a pain to install new tires. Tubeless ready tires need to seal air so it’s a lot tighter and harder cramp the last few inches of the tire onto the wheel.

After that the bead also needs to be properly seated. It requires a lot of pressure! For now I use CO2 canisters because they can release air in a very short time so it creates big air pressure to seat the bead. But CO2 tends to leak out the rubber overtime. So don’t forget to properly pump the tire with real air!

My periodic reminder to blogs and news outlets that, if you have #RSS or Atom feeds, you should remember to exclude those URLs from your frontend-based verifications.

If you want to control traffic on machine-to-machine endpoints, use standard throttling and rate limiting - not CAPTCHAs nor other frontend challenges.

My Miniflux list needs to be periodically pruned from dead links because, as websites increasingly add Anubis, Cloudflare challenges, hCAPTCHA etc. to their pages, they often forget that they also have some RSS paths to maintain - and that aggregators break if you return some random HTML to them.
