We dropped off my oldest child at college today. College is a five hours drive from home. We moved his stuff into the dorm then said goodbye.
I thought I’d be sad because we won’t see him every day anymore. But mostly I was scared that he won’t know how to do something; that he’ll get hurt (hit by a car or something); that his roommates will be mean to him; that he will be frustrated or have trouble finding things. And I realized after having a little cry, that there is NOTHING I can do about that stuff.
It’s up to him now. I hope he tries hard. I hope he can be patient. I hope he meets a ton of new friends and learns so many wonderful things. I hope he stays safe.
I feel like I’ve thrown him out of the nest and flown away without looking back. Does this get better?
