I can't wait for the US to adopt medicare for all. It's going to change your relationship with work far more than you'd ever expect.

(And the shitty parts of it will stop bleeding over into Canadian work culture.)

I can't wait for Canada to enforce it (or to take it over.) It would be great as an SPC Crown Corporation, "regional" divs for each Prov. To get the provinces on board: carrot - buy the hospitals (50+ yr mrtg); stick - enforcement of the health care act, with financial penalties.

Unfortunately, I do not believe it is structurally possible in the USA, May. Medicare is owned by the same shareholders who own the banking industry.

@Amgine @gildilinie We need it to happen in the US so that privatization slows down in Canada.

The Toronto subway is full of private healthcare service ads. Pisses me off.

I absolutely agree. But it may require revolution in our neighbours for the change to happen. And that is not the part of #Canada to advocate (Myself, being a dual citizen, can almost get away with - but not - advocating for it.)

OTOH, if #Alaska, #Maine, #Minnesota, or #California (the 4 most likely to pass the cost-saving measure) went ahead and **did it**, I think it would spread like wildfire. Which is why it will be fought, hard.

What annoys me most is: the business world should be all over this, like they are with roads and highways. Government taking on this cost, shifting the cost to taxpayers? Honey.

@Amgine @gildilinie @mayintoronto I love the idea and I wish we had true universal healthcare from coast to coast to coast.

But realistically, Québec will threaten separation and Canadian dismantling over the idea of encroaching on its “constitutional” obligations.

@mayintoronto Me neither. Single payer now. Healthcare is a human right. Imagine I wrote all this in all caps. I'm just sensitive to people's eyeballs and psyches. Boost me to connect me with people who want to make health care in the US normal. Please!

@urixturing At some point in time, you have to ask yourself: how much am I willing to fight for my family and my neighbours who are dying from entirely preventable causes? Getting the laws approved is the least of your problems.

It's funny. The amount the US **government** spends per capita on healthy care is so, so much higher than the rest of the world, and yet here you all are, shelling out even more individually for care.

I can't even imagine the quality of care you'd get with a single payer system and publicly-owned hospitals without increasing spending by a single dime.

This is going to take a long time to sort out. The sooner you start, the more time you buy to make it happen and stick.

@mayintoronto urgently needed. the fight to make it happen is going to reveal a lot of fault lines in american class struggle.

THE COUNTRY THAT COULD HAVE CARED — BUT DIDN'T

Every U.S. president since WWII could have introduced universal healthcare.

Every one of them had the power to create real social security — the kind that lets human beings live with dignity.

    They chose not to.

    Not by mistake.

Not because “the votes weren’t there.”

Not because of some invisible political constraint.

Not because the money wasn't there.

    It always has been.

    They just refused.
