So, we are going through another round of justifications for staying on Twitter. "Everyone who is anyone is still there. My posts don't help Elon, who I hate. Plus, Mastodon is icky." Really, it comes down to contributing your intellectual property to Twitter, a private corporation, owned by Elon Musk for free. Recent actions show he views all that content as his proprietary data for him to manipulate and monetize however he sees fit. If you are cool with that, go right ahead.

@JonChevreau @mastodonmigration I don't pay Elon Musk for the privilege of posting on Twitter, even all my tweets and retweets humiliating him. His blue tick fiasco isn't paying off. If anything it's likely to incentivize some, like me, blocking accounts that do pay him. Let's see how they like that. #TwitterMigration

@mastodonmigration "Everyone who is anyone" is also posting those tiresome vertical shorts on YT because TEH ALGORITHM SEZ.

It isn't making YT better, it's making my feed worse.

I understand why individuals do it but I also don't have to follow them anymore, just like I don't have to ever log back in to Twitter.

@mastodonmigration it helps not to make it either or. People are free to set up a Mastodon account and migrate at their leisure. As nice as it would be if the majority of Twitter users saw the light, baby steps.

@JohnGrahamIV Sure. That's true. It is really difficult to start something new, and it is certainly the case that many people have not left Twitter and don't intend to any time soon. Just saying that whatever you post on Twitter is content gifted to Elon Musk and that should enter into your analysis of the overall value proposition.

@mastodonmigration @JohnGrahamIV Maybe you deactivated your Twitter account, or Elon Musk did that for you. But the reality is that he isn't benefiting from most of what is posted there; certainly virtually nothing that mentions him by name. He wanted to buy our love but everything he does earns him public scorn. He has no way out of this situation. He's thrown money away and I'm using his platform to remind him of that. Others are doing the same thing. #TwitterMigration

On Twitter I can search for content posted years ago, including my own. Now 1. I cannot import my thousands of tweets into Mastodon, and 2. even if I could they would not be searchable without hashtags. So entirely leaving Twitter is a big and painful step. Just praying Elon will sell Twitter such that it can be restored to its former state before it is too late.

@mastodonmigration I'd like to challenge some of this post, which is why I'm not Boosting it. Firstly, you address a certain type of person who doesn't like Mastodon. I'm cool with you criticizing those people. However, I think it's counterproductive to try to shame those who refuse to deactivate their other account. Most of us have legitimate reasons for not doing so. 95% of my followers there aren't here, yet. Do I want to deny myself more chances to persuade them to come here? Of course not.

@mastodonmigration Another reason for not Boosting this is the unforeseen consequences of shaming everyone who won't deactivate their other account is it's likely to have the opposite effect; while most won't deactivate Mastodon accounts some could basically stop being active here instead of on both platforms. That's not what we want, right? Also, I think you overestimate Elon Musk's power. When he trends there it's always due to his being humiliated: he has no idea how to get what he wants.....

@mastodonmigration Elon Musk wants to monetize Twitter, and to use it for his own purposes but, far from being the noisy elephant in the room too powerful to budge, he's treated by most users, still, as an irritating moth. These users need to be encouraged to come here. When everyone does and we download our archives, then we can turn out the lights and laugh at Musk's dwindling power and fortune. Question is how to accelerate this process. Let's share ideas. #TwitterMigration

@TomDelargy You make many points which are, in fact, justifications for staying on Twitter. Perhaps the examples used above are too snarky, but the intent is not to shame. Rather, it is to clearly state the fact that, whatever the reason, continuing to post on Twitter is to continue to contribute your work to Elon Musk. If you believe that it is still something you want to do, then do it.

It’s worse than that. Even if you don’t post anything, you’re engagement is an asset that doesn’t just impact his coffers, it enables his real goal — to obfuscate truth, spread disinformation and radicalize users in the service of a right-wing ideology that’s specifically designed to generate false outrage for the purpose of continuing to shift resources to the upper class and protect them from accountability.
