@ariaflame I guess they make up sources at an academic level. If you ask them precise sources for a deterministic question, (I don’t use LLMs because I’m not a racist but) it looks like you need to verify them of course, but that they can point you to e.g. the correct open access datasets.

I don’t endorse in any way LLMs. But there’s the consumption problem, and there’s the production problem. We’ve got shiny new tech to replace them, and actually produce the cyberspace, as a democratic space.

@ariaflame If you merely consume democracy, if you don’t produce it, someone else will for you. In the context of the cyberspace, that’s Facebook. LLMs are a consequence of the centralization of our communications on mediocre, far-right, Twitter-like platforms.

@oceane I don't go on facebook, or twitter any longer. I live somewhere that voting is mandatory and ranked choice, so it's pretty good.
LLMs seem to be a bit like genies. If you are skilled enough to ask exactly the right question, you might be getting a correct answer. But they are being used by a load of people who don't know how to ask the right questions, and there are cheaper, easier and less hard ways on the environment and communities ways to get the answer.

@ariaflame I totally agree with you. I actually despise LLMs, but I think we need to be correct about them if we want to terminate them.

By the way, this was an impersonal “you”. I apologize if this wasn’t clear: I was referring to your students.
