How many commands critical to maintaining your infrastructure are maintained by ^R searching for them and would take you more than 30 seconds to look up if they fell out of your shell history?

staring across a wasteland of lockfiles that require immediate attention, forever, we must imagine Sisyphus singing, "I like dep bumps and I cannot lie"

okay. deep breaths. re-pulling didn't do anything but deleting and recreating my docker disk image fixed it.

good thing I don't need to do anything WITH APT RIGHT NOW

Livestreaming as a practice for focus can be extremely effective, but it can also be really depressing, because it prompts one to ask, "can I can sit down for the next 90 minutes with the reasonable anticipation of not needing to get interrupted, do a chore, or run an errand" with regularity, and if the answer is almost always "no" it really puts one's productivity issues into sharper relief

@davidgerard We've spent more than 75 years trying to keep code and data separate and vibe coding just drunk-drove a bulldozer through a lifetime of hard-learned lessons about best practices.

What do people use to externally monitor their servers these days? Pingdom was the popular, safe choice for a long time, but they were acquired by SolarWinds some years ago, and they recently jacked up the price.

eMudhra, the company that made 4 the new funniest number, put out a press release that said the problem was discovered "possibly with AI assisted techniques" to make it sound sophisticated and difficult and not something that just anyone could discover

No, what happened is that someone bothered to run a basic cracking script on all trusted certificates to see if any of them were actually THAT damn broken, and they were. There's probably other actors out there who noticed months ago and didn't report it, keeping the broken certificates in their back pocket for a rainy day.

and that’s 4 folks, we got it

Every time there's a new study on the negative impact of LLM tools on education, work, communications, and media, at least half the commentariat will always go "but you shouldn't throw the baby out with the bathwater, 'AI' has constructive uses!" even as they pretend to be 'critics'.

How bad do the effects have to get before they finally go "okay, yeah, maybe it is more bad than good"?

still a problem after reboot. siiiiigh

I'm going to assume that there is some deeply unfortunate caching or pooling going on here and just reboot

bad: no macOS security update for eMudrha yet
good: oh macOS has some out-of-band mechanism for cert invalidations
bad: this mechanism is invisible
good: there's a site where you can check https://emudhra.we-have-a-problem.com
bad: apparently various CLI tools (curl et. al.) use /etc/ssl/cert.pem and it's not updated
good: at least in safari the "result" column is all "✅ Did not connect"
VERY BAD: if I reload repeatedly SOME of the results SOME of the time say "❌ Insecure"

we've got a countdown on the website now too, so you can see how little time is left (IT IS VERY LITTLE TIME)

also if you're seeing this through the bridge on Bluesky but you're not donating then you are proving the inferiority of atproto as a network

I don't have enough tracking to determine which donations came from where, but just based on timing, it seems like LinkedIn showed up for well less than 1/4 of what Fedi did. continue to put them to shame, please: we're just a bit over $25k now https://superswingdistricts.org/2026/
