Anyone else use "Okeh, just until the next kitty cat" as a stopping point for scrolling on here?

Saturation and vibrance controls on every photo-editing app should be operable only by those who have passed a rigorous exam, and the licence should be staged. With a stage I licence, the controls are limited to ±12%. With a full licence, the limits go away and it doesn't matter because by then you know better than to exceed them.

Change my mind, I dare you.

Whoah-whoah, Shhhh-shhhh, look-look! The seldom-seen, rare and elusive correct use of 'decimate'!

Our hotel room had a Western Electric № 500 telephone (made by someone or other; there were many licensees). It was designed by rightly-famous industrial designer Henry Dreyfuss, introduced in 1950, and was the basis for Bell System phones for decades.

This one had a dingus inside which translated the dial pulses into DTMF tones. I used the phone once, to ring the front desk, and found I had forgot how nice is the experience. The receiver is easy to hold (with hand or with head + shoulder), the dial is easy to use, and everything feels just right, unbreakable and dependable and completely human-centric; it's a damn-near-perfect user interface. It was designed that way on deliberate purpose, and it shows.

Now THIS is a winter migration spectacle!

Thousands of Snow Geese fill the sky above a field crowded with Sandhill Cranes along New Mexico's Rio Grande bosque. The sheer number of birds is incredible, and the sound of all those wings and calls is something a photograph can never quite capture.

One of my favorite winter sights in New Mexico!

Normalize telling your friends that you love them.

"Here comes the bride." "Down came the rain." Ever notice these phrases are backward, with the verb before the subject?

It goes all the way back to Old English. And it never works with pronouns: "Here comes John," but not "Here comes he."

The best part is that we follow this "no pronoun" rule without even realizing it.

Update: it works great on Vanilla Swiss Earwig.

I quit caffeine 20ish years ago, after many years' sporadic tries. I'm undoubtedly better off and happier without it, and the only thing I really miss from time to time is coffee ice cream.

I've made excellent decaf coffee ice cream, but that requires effort aforethought and ingredients and a frozen cylinder.

I just figured out this Polish stuff, dusted onto vanilla ice cream and mixed in, makes an extremely damn credible facsimile of good coffee ice cream. I bet it'll work great on chocolate ice cream, too.

It's roasted chicory, barley, and rye. Caf-Lib tastes the same, but its granules are coarser so it might take more mixing and softer ice cream.
