… but only a month apart.
Almost exactly the same viewpoint, taken while crossing a small bridge over a gravelly riverbed. The first shot was taken on October 1st, and the second was on November 12th.
The river is Evindará near Mjóifjörður in eastern Iceland.
The photos were taken nine years apart, but the similarities and changes are the main reason for this toot. Winter takes hold quickly in Iceland.

10/17/2026Dance of the (Heaven) Veils
A beautiful, clear night with hours of starlight and little moonlight. I decided to be ambitious and try a new target.
This is the eastern part of the Veil Nebula, also known as the Cygnus Loop or Caldwell 33. The structure is part of a supernova remnant. The "229min" in the caption refers to the exposure time.
My pareidolia is seeing the outline of a face with a pointed nose, grinning spookily.

10/15/2026The western shore of Jökulsárlón. The tide is ebbing.
Icebergs in the lagoon have been floated by the rising tide then swept gently towards the sea as the tide changed.
The resulting surge of water creates whirlpools and strong currents, sweeping the ice out of the lake.
This entire sequence covers just 30 minutes.
Make sure you watch to the end, and the sweet Snow Bunting begging for seed!

10/14/2026Waterfall Of Raven Rocks
Nearing the end of February, and we hired a guide with a SuperJeep to take us to a remote site.
This swift and voluminous river contains several drops, including Aldeyjarfoss, Goðafoss and Hrafnabjargafoss, the eponymous waterfall.
Its turbulent rapids were choked with ice and capped by snow.
Massive and gorgeous icicles failed to still the foaming flow.

A clear day in February, and we're travelling towards Öxnadalur. The mountains are lit beautifully by the low sun in the south-south-west, only 10° above the horizon.
The wide water-cut valley has also been carved by ice into this stunningly lovely funnel. The collection of farm buildings and the piles of winter fodder lend excellent scale to the photo.

10/10/2026Dark Canyon
This huge gorge once carried the meltwater away from a massive glacier. When a hydroelectric plant was built to power an aluminium smelter, an enormous dam stopped its mouth.
The swift water plunging through the canyon was diverted, and this astonishing ravine was revealed.

Two shots of the same waterfall, both taken on a September afternoon, both from nearly the same viewpoint, but 11 years apart.
The differences are obvious; the weather is perfect in one and meh in the other, but look at the number of visitors.
2014, just us.
2025, hundreds.
To be honest, the only reasons we visited were because we were in the area and it was perfect rainbow conditions. We were rewarded with a lovely double.

10pm in mid-November, and the second part of a two hour auroral display is just coming to an end.
The moon is almost full, high in the south-south-east. It's milky light is picking out the snow on the mountain tops as we look north.

Rounding the promontory of Hvalnes, we saw the range of mountains commonly known as Eystrahorn, draped in gauzy scarves of mist.
One of the pinnacles of this extraordinary jagged mountain is bifurcated into a shape almost like a finger and thumb, and it seemed to grip the gossamer mists that had slid between them.

The morning began with wild winds and stormy skies, the forecast grim, our options limited.
The torn and tossed clouds, thawed by sunrise, were copied in the swirling river, its margins gelid.
Even the settled snow was touched by colour, and the mountain's peak was tinted pink.

Kötlujökull glacier in early February. Outside, a blizzard is raging but expected to diminish very soon.
Meanwhile, very little light is penetrating the ice walls of Katla ice cave. The usually turquoise ice is deep blue, blanketed by snow and bejewelled by huge icicles.
Only five of us made the journey; ourselves, our guide, and two young people who are lending scale to the shot.

This long, north-south oriented palagonite ridge is 764 metres / 2,507 feet above sea level. Its almost vertical cliff face reaches 671 m / 2201 ft, making it the highest in the country.
In Icelandic folklore, a giant named Jarngrímur is said to live within the mountain, guarding the country from invaders.

9/18/2026Autumn Colours
The beginning of October, and the first snow is yet to arrive in eastern Iceland.
The forecast is for a lovely day, so we set out early for somewhere we'd never visited before. An immense canyon, revealed by the diversion and reduction of a river, filled filled from bank to bed with "stuðlar" - basalt columns.
With its banks heavily wooded and clothed in the colours of autumn, this is Stuðlagil canyon.

Halfway through an October afternoon, and we're on the southern side of the Öræfajökull glacier in south-west Iceland.
The rocks between the two glacier tongues are lit beautifully, and the scene is reflected in the roadside lake.
The glacier on the left is Stigárjökull and Hólárjökull is on the right.

9/5/2026Narrow Fjord
This lovely place is easy to overlook as you plan your journey along the east coast of Iceland. There are very few buildings, the road is pot-holed dirt, and the gradients max out at 18%.
Visit on a day when the weather is being kind, with cloud shadows chasing across the mountain faces and the sun at its 30° meridian, and you're rewarded with this astonishing landscape. It's easy to imagine elves and trolls living here.

8/31/2026White Pyramid
Following a valley towards Flateyjardalur in north-eastern Iceland, we stopped at some shepherds' huts to admire the view.
With the sun at its low meridian due south, the dramatic peaks surrounding the valley were breathtaking. One stood out amongst its neighbours; mist-wrapped and ice-coated, this perfect point.
The peak is Kambsmýrarhnjúkur¹ at 1,041 metres (3,415 feet) high.

Travelling north along the Eastfjords of Iceland on a beautiful day in mid-November. As we turn towards Fáskrúðsfjörður, the sun is as high as it will get today at only 6° above the southern horizon.
Lovely cloud shadows are chasing across the sparkling snow and highlighting the sweeping curves of Hoffelsdalur.
The tall peaks in the background are Hoffell at 1092 metres / 3583 feet and Lambafell at 1097 m / 3599 ft.
